If Section 8 is an option, how can I get it soon without having to wait years on a waiting list?

  1. Talk to your school about Married Student Housing (if available). Single parents qualify to live there. They are definitely utilitarian, but you usually have others in the same or similar situations around you and that is nice. They are also usually close to campus, so you have little or no gas costs for to and from class. If that's not an option, talk to local grad students about where they're living. Lots of time, they have been in town longer and have located the best cheap places to live.

  2. Are the campus apartments an option?  While these apartments are nothing fancy, they are clean and safe for the cost.  And the costs for on-campus apartments are usually included in your total tuition bill, which means that any scholarship, grant, or loan money can be used to cover the cost of the apartment.

  3. Government Assitanted living. Some of the nicest apartment complexs in my city are government assitanted. Your rent is based on you income. They are very clean and very nice. I had a friend of mine living at one. It was as nice as my apartment, and 1/2 the price.
