I'm a student, desperately seeking practical accounting experience, yet I can't find anywhere to work, why?

I'm studying Accounting at University, in my second year now, and I want some practical accounting experience in one of the big accounting firms so I can get that edge against other people doing the degree.

Only thing is that I can't find anywhere that is offering employment. Does anyone know how I can get into a firm or can speak from past experience? I've just emailed all the big firms now asking if they will take me on board.

Thanks

p.s: I'm in New Zealand

  1. I doubt that you will get any work with a big accounting firm, with only one year of schooling.  The accounting firm could get in trouble for having inexperienced workers attempting to do the work of professionals.  If you made errors, depending upon the kind of errors, the accounting firm could get sued.

  2. Your school should have a career advisement office, you should start there - they should have suitable job listings, as well as other resources that could get you on the right track.  Also, if experience is the main thing you want, you can check to see if your school has any Internships available at big accounting firms; you won't get paid but you will have the exp and name for your resume.
