Question:

I'm a vegan, but I've been craving some non-vegan foods lately- how to resist?

This is especially the case when I go past the cakes and pastry sections of my supermarket. My mouth just starts to water and there don't seem to be any decent vegan alternatives. I've tried making my own, but they never taste any good.

I have been vegan on and off (occasionally for something like a piece of chocolate) for about 6 years.

What can I do to fight this little devil of a sweet tooth?

  1. The way I see it, non-vegan "foods" aren't food.  That's part of the mindset that keeps me vegan.  When I call non-vegan "foods" what they are (mammary secretions, reproductive waste, animal flesh/corpse, insect vomit), they lose their appeal.

That, and anything and everything I bake myself is better than the cr@p you find in the supermarket, and it's totally organic and vegan.

  2. I've never understood the attraction of the vegan lifestyle, it just seems pointless to me. I can understand not eating meat, I don't agree, but I understand it. But denying yourself any and all animal products is I think a bit silly. Dairy and eggs do not involve killing any animals, and those are two very important ingredients in any baking. If you crave those things strongly enough, just remember that no animals were killed, and enjoy one from time to time. It's better to consume in a controlled manner than to break down and binge somewhere along the way.

  3. they do make vegan chocolate. he tastes wierd at first, but you get used to it. And my favorite is Vegan ice-cream called Temptations Vegan Ice-cream

  4. Just indulge yourself.  Self flagellation is not a virtue in my eyes.

  5. Just eat the stinkin chocolate already!!!! No animals are harmed in the making of chocolate. Dairy products ARE healthy and chocolate has health benefits of it's own. We are doing the cows s service to consume milk as they require being milked for their own comfort.

  6. "  For those were meat eaters,

    Now is a vegetarian,

    or even a vegan soul,

"Meat" is a sin craving evil,

will pull you again and again to the doom...

only the "WILL" will resist!  "

  7. Ok I am trying to become vegan. But I am taking breaks now and then, til I get used to stop eating dairy products. Heres what to do...

    * Bring a bottle of water with you, that usually stops cravings, so always bring a bottle of water with you in a bakery or friends house. Herbal tea also helps.

    * Think of how unhealthy dairy is!

    * Also, think of what they had to do to the poor animal just to make "milk" and "eggs". It's rape and cruelty to animals.

    * Buy some soy foods, vegan cakes, in stores or you can go to peta2.com and look for some vegan foods such as vegan animal crackers, cake, muffins, cereal, etc.

    * While in your store, instead of getting cake or chocolate, buy vegan foods you REALLY love. This will help to get your mind off the dairy.

    * Know that when a craving hits, wait 10 minutes. Do something else. A good habit to get into is to take a walk instead of eating dessert. If, after 10 minutes, you still want sweets, gargle with an antiseptic mouthwash or brush your teeth. The aftertaste doesn't mix well with sweets and you'll probably lose your craving quickly.

  8. four words. nana's chocolate chip cookies.

i would seriously die without these....they sell them in most health food stores.

the no wheat one (in the purple package) is better than the one made with wheat (red package)

  9. Alternative Baking Company has really good cookies. Maybe you could try those.

  10. honestly--- u shouldnt be a vegan. its crazy

there is definately something that u use that is made of animal.

u have to eat meat-- its unhealthy not to. nd u probly use stuff made of animals nd u dont even realize it.

like soap has pig fat in it---- unless u dont bathe.

shoes are made of leather--- unless u wear plastic shoes

some clothes are made of wool

theres animal substances in the paint on ur walls

  11. why would you want to be a veagan

imagine eating whatever you want whenever you want

now compare that to being a veagan

    sucks doesnt it

  12. go to compassionatecooks.com, or buy a vegan desserts cook book. or veganagogo.com, they have a great recepy for chocolate cake!!

  13. Don't deprive yourself; that's what causes the cravings and causes you to go off your diet.  I often find homemade treats tempting, or desserts from special bakeries, but supermarket cakes and pastries?  Since when are they any good?

There are a lot of vegan chocolates out there, even some of the commercial brands (obviously not milk chocolate, but dark chocolate).  Just read the labels carefully.

The internet is full of vegan dessert recipes; keep at it and I'm sure you'll eventually find some that you like.  I once made a batch of macrobiotic oatmeal cookies that were legendary even among my non-vegetarian friends (unfortunately I wasn't using a recipe and I was unable to replicate them).

  14. cook cook cook cook cook.

vegan cupcakes take over the world is a great book for (obviously) cupcakes, and the few other books by the authors are great too. look around online, that kind've thing. it really is possible to bake without eggs/milk; flaxseeds, bananas, and plain old generic "egg subsitute" all work well.

oh, and vegan chocolates exist. they're usually pretty dark but very good. gives me another excuse to love dark chocolate, which is also healthier than milk chocolate.

  15. you know you can make your own cakes with vegan alternatives for butter, egg and milk?

anyway don't let your morals suffer. stay vegan. just eat right. eat pasta with your meals and bread. they will fill you up. and never EVER go shopping on an empty stomach! :)

  16. I am not even a vegetarian, but I LOVE the vegan cakes and pies at Whole Foods!  I don't think I need to fight off my vegan tendancies, but the sugar is bad, sure!

  17. Life is too short to deny yourself a little chocolate or cake every now and then.  Go ahead and have some: who cares if you aren't strictly vegan?  There are no vegan police and any guilt you feel is strictly self imposed.  So go for it.

  18. keep eating and the next thing you will eat is meat

  19. Your body is telling you that you need certain foods.

    Don't ignore it.

  20. get a picture of ur craving and place it in front of u while ur eating ur vegan food. it will give the illusion as if ur eating it

  21. I've been a vegetarian for 8 yrs and I tried going vegan but had the same problems. I think that its okay to indulge a little. Maybe try setting a limit and having one non-vegan sweet a week...it gives you something to look forward to and can help ward off the other temptations. However, if you want to stay really strict, theyre some decent vegan sweets at whole foods. They are a little pricey, but being vegan is pricey so i guess you are used to that.
