Question:

I'm a young Utah widow & mother of 2.. How do I find help paying my child's medical bills?

A couple of months ago I started a new job and with my new pay ceased to qualify for medicaid coverage. The new job provided health insurance but it didn't kick-in until after 3 months of working. Before the end of the 3-months, my 4-year old knocked the TV over himself and had to be escorted (on a helicopter) to the hospital. He's fully recovered now, and I'm really grateful for that. But now I have to deal with all the bills which in total exceeded 40K. I have no way of affording that. I was wondering if there are any organizations or state/federal programs that can help single mothers in my situation pay or negotiate down the amount? Any help greatly appreciated!

  1. The hospital social worker should point you in the right direction to receive some sort of medical assistance.  Or, look in the phone book under Social Services.  I am not from Utah, but there must be some sort of help out there for you.  Best of luck.

  2. check into www.govbenefits.gov

  3. Check with the Salvation Army, St. Vincent De Paul, or other charities and churches in your area.  They can sometimes give financial assistance and start fundraisers.  Call your local news station.  They will sometimes put your story on the news and donations will be sent directly to your child's bank account for medical bills.  Also put your story in your local news paper.  The paper can start an account for donations from their many readers.  Don't give up.  If you would like to talk I can think of many ideas to help.  Email me,  I'm from MI but I will look up info from any state.  Hang in there!!! :>)

  4. Check with Medicaid.  It may still have been in effect until the regular insurance kicked in. Your child may have been eligible even if you were not.  The hospital may be able to suggest agencies also.
