I stated college wanting to be a teacher but I switched majors my second year to Marketing. After working in an office all summer and being totally bored I think I want to be a teacher again where I can interact with kids and make a difference in their lives. I am supposed to graduate next June, should I get my business degree and just go back later for my teaching degree?

  1. You can do this. A friend of mine went back to get her Masters in Education. She left teaching high school because she was tired of the students' lack of interest in learning. She taught college for a while. Now she has her MBA and started her own business. I heard that the kids today are different and difficult. Good luck. But if that's what you want to do then go for it. I thought of it myself.

  2. you can also become a college lecturer with your business degree later on

  3. Yes.  It is the easiest way to do it, and with the double degree you can earn slightly more money, depending on what state/province you are in.

  4. If possible, pick up some ed classes while you are still enrolled....it's lots easier than going back later. (I got my ed certification at 35. It took four years of night school to do it right, then I had to student teach)

Teaching is very hard work, but very fulfilling work. I think it's a calling, more than a career. It's a tremendous responsibility and commitment, but so important!

You might want to research Teach for America as an option.

I also recommend doing a shadowing at a local school. See what it feels like to be on the teacher side.

As for your marketing, maybe you need to do a variety of internships or job shadowings to make sure you don't like it.

    You could always teach marketing!

  5. graduate as planned, and look for an alternative certification program.  this will put you in a classroom right away after a few prep "seminars".  you'll be paid at the first year teachers' salary, and you'll be a teacher, fully certified in a year!  classes generally meet one night per week,  and you learn new trends in teaching, as well as how to function and survive your first year.  you will usually get a mentor who is there to help and guide you.  not sure where you're located, but we have one in milwaukee.  here's the link.  reading about what's out there can at least give you an idea if it's something you want to pursue.  good luck.
