I'm adopted and I'm pretty sure I'm biracial, can a DNA test tell me my racial identities?

I was worried that it wouldnt work because I have to X chromosomes, so the test can't tell me my fathers race right?

Can you recommend a company I should go to.

  1. National Geographic is actually doing a heritage DNA study,  I believe you may be able to find out some basic information about your origins.  This is possible.  You have to pick which side you want studied.  you also have to order a DNA kit.

Here is a link for more information:

    Good luck.

I hope this information is helpful.

  2. Ancestry testing looks at specific genetic markers, and can give you a good picture of your ethnic heritage.  The way it is done, however, cannot tease out which of your birth parents or ancestors gave you which markers.

In other words, if your mother was half Irish and half Italian, and your father half Russian and half Haitian, you would get results that showed (about) 25% markers of each of these 4 ancestries.  However, your results would not tell you which of your 2 parents (or 4 grandparents) were which ethnicity.

    Good luck to you!

  3. No DNA tests will not tell you the race of your father.  You are right, your "X" chomosomes are not detectible on a DNA test. There really isn't a company or research lab that you can go to really for this.  DNA is all about the genes and the blood line and has nothing to do with race.  So I'm at a loss for words for you here really.

    God bless you!

  4. It doesnt matter that you are  female two X chromosomes, you still inherited half of your mothers DNA and half of your Fathers. So yes you can find out.

  5. Yes.

  6. dna cannot tell what your racial indentity is.. best way probably is to check on ur adoptive parents and ask them where they got u..in an orphanage or something..if you're legally adopted, then the agency may have some info on your whereabouts..

  7. I awalys felt bad for adopted people, its just so sad.  I'm curious to know what is the race of the family that adopted you?

  8. Yes, it is called ancestry DNA testing.  Here's some links to places that do it.  It is very expensive though - around $300.

    http://www.dnatesting.biz/Ancestry_Testi...

    http://www.dna-worldwide.com/ancestry-te...

You can do an internet search for "ancestry dna testing" to bring up all the sites.  If you want a local place, just add the largest city near you to the search.

  9. Yes you can.  I discovered my Irish ancestry via DNA.

I think females can only trace their maternal line, unless they have a full blood brother who can test the paternal line for them

    I used familytreedna.com

They are really helpful and probably a better place to ask questions like this - they know their stuff there
