I'm in a unique situation - I have a very strong academic background (dual undergraduate degrees in business and communication as well as an MBA) with a few non-paid consulting projects under my belt. Additionally, I graduated with honors and am involved with community volunteer programs.
However, since I only JUST turned 22 years old, I don't have a very long "professional" (paid) work history. To my dismay, I've found that MANY of the employers that I want to work for ask ONLY for paid (or worse yet, salaried) work history. In many cases, that's a way of screening out applicants before I can even talk to anyone-
And perhaps worse yet, my age works against me in more ways that one. Recently I was called in for a serious interview regarding a relatively decent job, only to be told right off-hand that they were "expecting someone older" when I entered the room. Although I felt that I nailed the interview by covering all of my transferable skills and experience, they never even returned my follow-up communication.
I guess I should be flattered that my resume and cover letters are flagging the attention of recruiters and HR managers, but I'm really disappointed that my age is working against me in so many ways-
