Question:

I'm an African-American tennis fan, and I think Monfils on-court dancing is tacky and inappropriate...?

Venus and Serena are both "urban music" fans and great dancers, but they have ultimate respect for their craft, and I don't think they've ever done anything like that (at least - I hope not). Tennis has a rich history as a sport for ladies and gentlemen, and "Crank dat Soulja Boy" is just way the h**l out of line. I don't know how anybody who's ever been to Wimbledon (or any of the slams with all of their rich history)could ever drop their pants like that on a tennis court. Anybody agree or disagree?

  1. The tackiest,most disrespectful,rude,childish,

inappropriate behaviour ever seen and heard on a tennis court came from John McEnroe. His tantrums, ridiculous arguments, foul language and poor sportsmanship are legendary. He broke raquets, swore at the referees and judges and ballboys and girls and would keep the public and his opponents waiting interminable minutes while he "did his thing" in the middle of a match! I couldn't wait for the day that he hung up his raquet and I don't care how sublime his tennis was. Borg was far better and he never needed to act like a spoiled brat to get people's attention. His raquet spoke for him.

In contrast, the most elegant and gentlemanly player in every sense was the wondeful Arthur Ashe. For those who never saw this player,it is impossible to describe his stately  presence on and off court. And he was no stuffed shirt either but a very polite and respectful GENTLEMAN!

Monfils is a young kid and if he wants to dance, that's fine with me. It wasn't "in-your face-" taunting;it was a juvenile celebration. Give him a break. He'll grow up. If only McEnroe had stuck to "dancing" on the court!

  2. Who cares. He won. He was happy. Get over it

  3. That's the dumbest question I have ever heard.  Nobody cares about your race.  Are you saying because you are black makes your statement more credible or that everybody should say his dance is tacky?   I don't think so.  People express themselves the way they choose whether you like it or not.  I enjoy tennis and a little action from time to time is great for the game.  Djokovic and Rafa among others have their tactics as well.  Monfils is French he doesn't have to dance like black Americans.  I hate the dance black Americans do it is so ridiculous to me and the language is so very primitive - no ones understand a word they say.  He is just trying to imitate a silly dance that doesn't deserve the air time.

  4. jeeez, what does race even have to do with anything?u are african-american, he's french..(and i'm african-african[thts if thr's anythn like tht)..anyway my point is we all come from different backgrounds and cultures hence the difference in ways of expressing ourselves and it might not be what i or u like but, d**n man,..deal with it.

Djokovic takes off his shirt at every opportunity,Benniteau(pardon the spelling) goes crazy  taking his shirt and SHOES off..i'm not exactly crazy about either one of those celebrations but hey,i have no business telling them its tacky.i jst ignore.

  5. I don't agee. He won and he was happy. He has a right to celebrate.

  6. I think the dance was fine but I think he should of waited until the other guy had left the court. I think its rude when players celebrate hard out in front of their opponent.

  7. lawlawlawl putting in your raceis just asking for to get tool on. But on the serious note, drop pant is not what i would expect. But at the same time people will do crazy things when they've won one of the biggest games of their life. emi finals in a mjor, comeon its pretty exciting. So i guess in the end it is ok for him to do what he wants.

  8. If it was anyone else "black" that had done something similar in front of the French, tennis fans would never hear the end of it.

  9. Did you see Marat Safin drop his shorts at Wimbledon when he hit a great shot? He was fined for it.

  10. What has race got to do with it? You must be a racist, racist come in all colors. Tennis is just a dumb az game.

  11. Whats fun for some

    Is glum-time for others.

Of course it was inappropriate - and I'm sure he was told so off court.

Tennis was always a graceful game in the past it's true -

but it's rather fun to go into the history of 'bad' behaviour

in the 30's players smoked and swigged whiskey in between sets.

Ille Nastaste went on court with an umbrella at Wimbledon and shocked the fans and press - was accused of bringing the game into bad repute.

At the Australian Open a player was defaulted for his language on court - John is now well respected.

Will we remember Monfils for the colour of his butt, his crazy dance steps, or his inspired shots? - time will tell.

  12. Such is the passion of youth.  Monfils earned his moment of glory.  His way of celebrating may not be to your liking or mine, but I guess he just couldn't contain himself.

  13. That's what makes Monfils - Monfils.  Every player celebrates differently and I consider his' ok.  I mean, if we have to watch Nadal picking his pants the whole match why not let the kid dance for a few secs?

  14. I agreed with Gabriela, J McEnroe was such a low life. I couldn't believe they let him play for that long. How can somebody tell the chair umpire that his mother should have aborted him? That was just down right unacceptable. Compare to what McEnroe did I don't think dancing Soulja Boy is a problem.

  15. Yes, tennis has a RICH history, and in the past was watched and patronized only by the RICH.  Within the last 10 years or so, tennis has (thankfully) become everyone's game, due partly because of the variety of characters playing at  top levels.  People want top talent, but don't want to be bored to death.  They enjoy a few antics, but I do agree that things can go too far, and it's up to the rules committee to set the standards.  I think Serena's past "outfits, i.e. catsuit" were much more distracting  and distasteful than a once-in-a-while victory dance.
