I have a layover in Rome for about twelve hours. Will I be allowed to leave the airport during this time? I know American citizens with valid passports don't need a visa to enter Italy, but what about during layovers? Thanks.

  1. Go out, just don't miss your flight.

I'm assuming you are going to the Fumicino Airport, it is around 45 minutes from Rome, but it gives you the chance to visit something at least.

If you can, I recommend you chance your connection for the day after, Rome is Rome and is just never time enough.

  2. No problem, but you will have to go through passport control so allow a little time for that. You do not say where you are going to after Rome, but if it is some other place in Italy or elsewhere in most of Europe west of Ukraine, you will not have to go through another passport check until you leave. Thanks to the Shengen treaty, border crossing in Europe is now fairly painless.
