I'm thinking about going to either England or Italy, but tips in general would be appreciated. I've only visited for a few days (usually with a tour guide...ugh) so I've never actually had to adapt.

  1. Well, it depends on how much time you're planning to spend.  I've visited for short stays (under 3 weeks) several times and never had much of a problem.  Western Europe isn't so radically different from the US.  There are some small differences in customs from country to country but you pick those up by being there.  Most people are understanding and will help you get along.

I suggest you buy some good guide books for each country.  I like the Eyewitness Guides.  Great maps, transit info, local information.

Consider joining one of the Meetin.org sites for the cities you're interested in.  Meetin.org is free to join and use - it's a networking site.  You can get help from locals - believe me they will be happy to give you the lay of the land.
