I've studied French for five years, but i've never taken a German lessen. Does anyone know if a lot of English is spoken there? And any other info about Germany would be great because i really don't know too much! Thanks!

  1. hi! I have lived in berlin for several years. it's a city where you can find a lot of culture, history, fun things and friends. most people do know a bit of english, although long term I'd recommend strongly to go to a school (eg "Hartnackschule", specifically for foreign students speaking german). When you are a student people, mostly teachers would expect you to learn German. But don't worry, it's easy when you do "learning by doing" and after all, you already know how to learn a foreign language.

It's a great place to live, still the cheapest city to rent an appartment in and in summer it's so wonderful with all the parks and lakes! you'll love it!

  2. Most people in Germany speak English, especially the young people. You should not have any trouble getting around, but if you really want to learn German you can take classes at a Volkhochschule (like a community college), or even just talk with Germans. You'll pick up a lot just by hanging out with them.

As for other aspects of Germany, a good place to shop for groceries is Kaufland. It's cheap and has a good selection.

Die Bahn (www.bahn.de) is the easiest way to get around. Within Berlin the Metro system is really great but confusing at first.

Take an English walking tour to acquaint yourself with the city. The tourguides are really friendly and you will have a much better understanding of the city afterwards.

Random Fact: There are 55 Dunkin Donut shops in Berlin.
