the reason i'm asking is my daughter will be a yr. old on monday and she tried to climb out of her crib the other morning and ended up flat on her face!! I got her checked with our fam. doctor because she would cry unless i would hold her and thought something was wrong. she's okay, but i'm worried she's going to keep doing it!! she hates sleeping in her crib now!! she cries when we lay her down... and our sound sleeper, is up several times a night!!

So how old was your child(ren) and what did you do? what would you do in my situation?

  1. My mother said I used to do this all the time between 10months and a year (I walked very very earlier) and they ended up putting me in my big girl bed with the safety bars (the kind that slide under the mattress). It's easier to climb out of without getting hurt. As for climbing out, that's something that must be handled seperatly.

  2. My baby boy did, and I was luckily enough to buy a bed for my daughter that had a trundle. Because the trundle was so low to the floor, if he fell off would have only been a 15cm drop. That or cushions on a floor...... I wouldn't be putting her in the crib again.

  3. You need to switch to a toddler bed immediately. When a child is climbing out of there crib they are at risk for injuries. Toddler beds are lower to the floor, but still have sides so she can't roll out at night. Good luck!

  4. yes i did that.

when i was 1 i used to be such a climber and i have a mesh travel cot in the kitchen and i weaved my fingers and toes into the mesh and climbed out and smashed head first onto a marble floor.

my mum says it was worse day of her life - had to be rushed to A&E , but because of falling on the front of my head - and not the back- i survived with nothing more than a concussion and a bruise lol. but the doctors were concerned about child abuse because they didn't believe my mum when she told them about my climbing habits - that was until the next day when the nurse came into my room and watched me climb out of the hospital crib and on to a windowsill.

interestingly my mum says she can pinpoint that moment in my life as when i first started to get travel sickness.

  5. I put a toddler bed where the crib used to be and just make sure that your baby is in a safe place where she can't get a hold on anything like small pieces( pretty much anything she can hurt herself with.

my baby bed was right next to our bed for a little while so my baby slept there in her toddler bed, that way she wouldn't freak out having a new bed and a new place to sleep.

  6. Most all of mine have did it (all but 1 to be exact) they were ranging from 1 years old to 2 tears old...thats when we move them to a toddler bed....

  7. I don't have any kids, but 1 of my nieces used to do that as a baby.

  8. I did that when I was around 2-3 years old. Only, I didn't get hurt so they just told me not to. I would put pillows and blankets and stuff around the crib so the she is cushioned and I would make sure that you have a device that could tell you when shes crawling out of the crib.

  9. Your baby is definitely too young to be left alone in any kind of bed other than a crib.  So, unless you want to adopt a family bed and let baby sleep with you, I would highly recommend a crib tent.  This is a mesh tent that goes over the crib so baby can't escape...

  10. Most kids climb out eventually - it's the standard method of deciding when to move them into a bed.

The other thing which both mine certainly did sounds like what yours is doing - they get to a stage where they realise they can stand up in the cot, but they're not too sure how to lie themselves back down again. You just have to keep on going in and lying them down. Eventually they realise a) that you're not going to take them out, and b) how to lie down again and go to sleep by themselves.

If yours is climbing out at one, though, that's probably too young to go in a bed - see if you can figure out how she did it, and take away whatever it was she used.

  11. Neither of my children climbed out of their crib, but with the youngest i was afraid she would. When she was about 14 months i decided it would be best to move her out of the crib. I didn't think she was ready for a toddler bed so instead i put her crib mattress on the floor. I put a thick rug next to it in case she rolled out. She loved it! The main disadvantage is that she could then get in and out of bed easily, but eventually got used to the idea and would sleep well. I found it a good bridge between crib and toddler bed. The only thing is you have to be sure to baby-proof _everything_ in the room! It may not be a solution that works for everyone, but it worked for me.

  12. I thought they all eventually climb out..both of mine did.  It's time for a bed once they climb out.

  13. My oldest climb out at 9 months.  I immediately got him abed.  And then my nightmares started he was in Mommy's bed.

  14. I assume your crib mattress is set at the lowest level and that the crib rail is up?  Is there something like a dresser next to the crib that she's using to help her get out?

None of mine have climbed out so far.  Of course, the 2nd-4th were in playpens.  That would be something to try.  They might be a little harder to climb out of, and she'd be a lot closer to the ground if she did climb out.  Another option would be a toddler bed with rails, or a crib/toddler mattress on the floor.

  15. when my son Tristian was younger he always climbed out of his crib and kept hitting his head and getting hurt thats when we realized he was getting to big for his crib and moved him into a todler bed.  But he was about to be 2 so he was older but she is obivously curious and if you are afraid she will do it again just put some padding by the bottom of the crib incase this happens again

    hope this helped
