i'm the only girl in cancun with my friends who are all guys and since they all act like macho, they decided to stay. right now, im tanning and it is sunny and hot as h**l. its hard to believe that hurricane is coming this way. all my guy friends are hooking up camera's on their hotel balcony ready to send out to i-report and youtube. they seem very excited and they want to see the Eye of the hurricane passing on top of our hotel. they assured me that it will be safe since we are staying at 5 star hotel and even hotel employees told us to stay. they said it will be a "thrill of our lifetime." we just got here and we are scheduled to stay here till next tuesday. they refuse to leave. so i aint leaving as well.

However i am kind of scared. I know hurricane Wilma hit cancun while ago. Me leaving is out of the question. i am not leaving. but what should i do to prepare for this immense storm? should i duck under the bed? should i stay at hotel lobby?

  1. If Cancun takes a direct hit, you may not have any choice but to stay wherever hotel staff herds you to for safety. If your hotel is directly on the beach, and the lobby is on the first floor, you won't be staying there, it will be full of water. The second floor might have water too. It's best to be several stories up and away from windows, as the wind may blow them out. A lot of times, when hotel guests are stuck riding out a hurricane, they end up in the hallways together.

I live in a hurricane zone, and although I've never evacuated for any of them, including Katrina, my choice to stay is partially because, as a homeowner, I do not wish to leave my property vulnerable to looters in the days after a storm when it can take many days for roads to be cleared to get back in. Also, I am not directly on the beach, and I am in a well-built structure on high ground that has never  flooded - not even in Katrina.  But if I were ever in a place where a hurricane was coming and it was not my home, I would get the h**l out. Good luck !

*****Bear in mind, what I have outlined is only in the event Cancun takes the eye or the eye is extremely close to Cancun. It won't be quite as scary if the eye is not really close to Cancun.

  2. Actually reports show the eye of the storm will pass about 80 miles south of Cancun.  Yet, you will still see alot of rain and high winds on Tuesday.  Would be best to make sure you have plenty of canned goods, bottled water, ect as it's possible that most utilities will be knocked out on the Yucatan.

Be prepared for the worst, though and don't try to do any bodysurfing or something dumb.

  3. They are still saying this hurricane WILL hit Cancun and as every minutes goes by, it looks less and less likely.

This website will give you info as well.

    http://www.hurricanecancun.com/

The hurricane is a Cat 4 at the moment and needs another 5 mph of windspeed to become a cat 5 - it is forecasted to hit the Yucatan Peninsula to the south (close to Belize/Chtumal).

What does this mean for Cancun - tropical strom force winds only and minimal damage.

The hotel will probably tell you to stay in your rooms - you will be told what to do, make sure you listen to them.

SOME ANSWERERS DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT - IT WILL NOT HIT WITHIN 80 MILES - MORE LIKE 200 MILES.  TAKE NOTICE OF THE PEOPLE THAT ARE HERE, NOT PEOPLE THAT ARE RECEIVING INCORRECT NEWS REPORTS! :)

  4. I was in Cancun 2 years ago when Hurricane Emily came through.  The hotel I stayed at had a prearranged storm shelter.  They bussed us to the shelter until the hurricane passed.  I was forced to get on the bus to the shelter about 2 and returned 11am the next day.  I tried to stay at the hotel but they did a room to room check and told people the HAD to go to the shelter.  I am quite certain every hotel is a little different.  I stayed at the Grand Caribe Real.

Now, Emily was pretty much nothing in comparison to Wilma (the same year).  Emily just hit and moved on where Wilma hit and decided to take in a few sights.

  5. just stay calm dont worry every thing will be ok just go will ever 1 else goes ok well good luck

    and stay calm

  6. the mexican government will send an order too evacuate the resort and transfer you all to the basement of the other resort (if any) their camera by the lobby will all be useless for you will be guarded underground (for your protection). I just got back this afternoon flt 501 usa3000. Im surprise your resort didnt give you guys the notice yet co'z our resort called a meeting this morning to inform us the gov't plan (and theirs). Good luck you there, stay safe, category 5 aint for trill seeker, hirricane wilma got nothing compare to Dean. My prayers are with you all who's still stuck there.
