I'm staying at my Dad's house for a few days, and my brother brought his laptop with him. The problem is this: he can't get any signal at all and he wants to know how to do a Wired Connection. I have network cables, but I don't know where to plug them in. Do I plug them in to the modem or PC? How do I get my brother a Wired Connection?

  1. The modem plugs into the ROUTER if you have one.  Then the ethernet cable plugs into the ROUTER port 1 for the pc, and then into the pc on the other end.  The next ethernet cable plugs into port 2 on the Router and then into the laptop.

For wired connections you will need to change the switch on the laptop likely.

If you do not have a router

then you need to plug the modem wire into the pc >

and then next plug a CROSSOVER cable between the pc and laptop ports for laptop connectivity.  With this type of set-up the laptop will only be able to access the internet when the pc is turned ON.

Don't forget to run the Network Wizard in Control Panel for the laptop to join the Network.

If you need all those instructions, please post again.

  2. If you do not have a router, plug an Ethernet patch cord into the modem and then into the computer.

Warning - Depending on the ISP - this may or may not work.

If it does not work, you will need a router

  3. Does your dad HAVE broadband service? Does he have a router? If so, plug into that. If he has cable or DSL but no router, plug into the modem (in place of his computer.) Or just use his computer...

  4. The cable connects between the router (or modem, if there's no router) at your Dad's house, and the regular network jack on your laptop.  Usually routers have 4 ports for wired access, which would allow up to 4 computers to share the connection.

Of course your Dad must already have cable or DSL Internet service for this to work...

  5. if you have a router ... it should be PLUG and PLAY lol
