okay so i'm auditioning 4 The Sound of Music and the part of Liesl. I understand that the Von Trapp family is caucasian--along with Liesl. but i'm pacific islander (hawaiian, filipino, like that) and i have tan skin and brown hair. i know that race shouldn't matter, but i can't help but thinking that appearance definitely counts as at least 30% for an actor to fit the part. it makes me feel pretty insecure.

what do i do?

  1. idk

  2. You are going to need a lot of spray paint.

  3. its ok just dont worry wat people say kick butt on that auddition

  4. Just use your strongest monologue and song for the audition (assuming those are the requirements) and see what happens. Have some faith that they won't typecast. My high school once did a production of Dracula which is traditionally cast with all caucasian actors, most of ours weren't. After I graduated they did a production of One Flew Over the Cuckcoos Nest where Chief was played by a white boy in a lot of make up.

  5. dont worry man, ive seen asians play white characters before and ive seen east indians play black characters. People understand this is a country of immigrants, im sure that won't matter much at all.

    gd luck

  6. Go for it. You might get it, you might not. Good luck =)

  7. umm.... it shouldn't matter becuz think of it this way. robert downey jr. plays a black guy in tropic thunder but he's white. well anyway it doesn't matter.

  8. Go ahead an audition, however you're right that looks do count in casting and especially when casting a family they will want all the children to look as if they could actually be related. And in the case of TSOM, the family is Austrian, which figures into the plot with the n***s, so colorblind casting doesn't really work.

HOWEVER. If you're auditioning for a community theatre, they will have to go with the people who show up and audition, which could be a mix of people, none of whom look alike. So, you never know. If cast, they can always you in a blonde wig and use lighter makeup, to help you blend. So, go for it!! In the professional world, it wouldn't fly, but with community theatre, you can end up with all sort of combo's, none of which actually make sense in the real world. The audience doesn't usually even care.
