I'm auditioning to get into a music degree... can I use amplification?

I'm auditioning to get into a Bachelor of Music specialising in contemporary voice. I have to film the audition and submit it on video. As it is being recorded I'm not sure how great the sound quality will be, so do you think they would mind if I amplified my voice by using a microphone -- or could that be seen as cheating? Is it normal to use a microphone in an audition or is it really against all the rules?

I'm sorry if this is a silly question! :-) Any advice would be appreciated.

  1. Seems pretty anal to disallow a simple microphone.  It doesn't really change how your ability as a singer is going to be perceived.

  2. Heya, it depends entirely on the college. They may audition you in a performance setting with a few people watching or they may audtion you in a practice room with one person. Mic's aren't considered cheating.. it purely depends on what is the most convienent way for the college to see lots and lots of people.

Phone up and ask.. they will be impressed that you are preparing for it.
