I'm doing it in stages, right now i'm not eating pork or beef. Only fish & birds. I don't want to start subsituting these with junk foods, so what are some good foods to get protein from?

  1. Tempeh, seitan (wheat gluten), tofu, TVP (Textured vegetable protein), lentils, chickpeas, quinoa, spirulina, buckwheat, amaranth, broccoli, mushrooms, potatoes, beans, rice & beans, apples, banana, oranges,  watermelon, seeds (hemp, flax, pumpkin, sesame, sunflower), peanut butter, soymilk, some premade meals (such as Amy's, etc) & meat substitutes (such as Boca, Gardenburger, Tofurkey, Lightlife, Morningstar, Yves, etc) or the main sources of veg protein.

  2. peanuts, eggs, cheese, tofu

  3. Hey congrats on going veg! Despite what some people say, it's not that difficult to get enough protein on a meat free diet.

    The Vegetarian Society says:

'Most foods contain at least some protein. Good sources of protein for vegetarians include nuts and seeds, pulses, soya products (tofu, soya milk and textured soya protein such as soya mince), cereals (wheat, oats, and rice), free-range eggs and some dairy products (milk, cheese and yoghurt).'

In addition to this list, peanut butter is a simple way to boost your protein intake. You might find it easier to go vegetarian at your own pace. You don't need to cut out meat straight away. It's whatever you feel comfortable with. You've already made a great start- by reducing your meat intake.

There are 8 essential amino acids that your body needs. By eating a wide variety of foods throughout the day, you will get adequate protein. You don't need to combine proteins at mealtimes.

    Good luck :)

  4. beans, lentils, tofu, & low fat cheese are the best

fake meat products are good on occasion, too much is unhealthy

experiment with tofu. it's really good when you cook it well.

beans are super cheap & super tasty. plus they're really easy to make. try indian food--a lot is vegetarian.

peanut butter is always good too.

  5. good answer hollywood, but all kinds of beans and legumes are a great source of protein also.

  6. Whole grain foods, beans, nuts etc. Are all great sources but everything` you eat pretty much has protein in it.  If you follow the vegetarian food pyramid, you'll get everything you need.

  7. Anything. Really! All fruits and veggies have protein. The fallacy is that in this country we eat too much protein! Protein is very complex. It stresses the body to have to break it down and creates an acidic environment in the body. The countries with the most osteoporosis have the highest rates of milk consumption!  I am talking about countries like the USA, Finland, and Sweden. It is thought that this is because of excessive protein intake via all that dairy, which is high in protein. When our bodies become too acidic, due to too much protein intake, calcium is leached from the bones to create a balance, because calcium is an alkaline mineral.

Bananas are a complete protein. Do people ever tell you that? No. Even when you read vegetarian info (and look at how to spell it correctly, please, since you want to become one), you always have dairy pushed at you. Gee, I wonder if it has anything to do with the dairy lobby...

  8. The first stage should be learning how to spell it.

    Vegetarian.

  9. nuts, very yummy protein substitute but go away with salted and oily, roasted nuts are great! TVP, tofu (firm tofu tastes like chicken. lol), legumes, rice (has fair amount of protein), soy products, soy milk. Theres alot. Im vegan and hardly worry about protein.
