I'm bipolar, does that mean I can't adopt a child?

My husband and I have been married 12 years, we have 2 children who are 9 and 11. We are considering adopting children.

Now I'm thinking, I don't even know if we can. I'm bipolar, would that stop me from being able to adopt?

  1. DeT is right!

  2. Depends where you live but I do think so. They look at your health to determine if your healthy enough to care for a child. They made my mother & her husband go through different physicals. I wish you & your family all the luck in the world!

  3. Wow lucky kids.

Adoption is supposed to give them a "better" life, instead they get to go live with some bipolar woman who won't even see a doctor.

    Some "better" life.

  4. Its lovely that you want to adopt.

I dont know but why not go to an adoption agency and ask. Im sure there wouldnt be black and white rules, they would look at each case individually. Good luck

  5. They would just need a statement from your doctor that your condition is treatable and is under control either with medication or monitoring or however you are managing it.  Good luck to you.
