Do I have to call the docks in advance? Is there a booking agency? Do the docks usually fill up quickly?

  1. It can vary from country to country.  If you do sail around the world you will meet many cruisers who are doing the same thing and you will learn the procedures for different countries from them.  Customs officials will often come aboard your boat, as well as representatives from the health department and agriculture department in many countries.  You will not always be able to dock your boat if you are going around the world.  Sometimes you will anchor, and you may have to dinghy ashore to get the officials.  Best of luck.  It is a great plan.

  2. This site has all the requirements needed for world cruising.

    Look under the countries link.

  3. Imaka has it right. Once you set sail you'll find that word of mouth is the main way we sailors find out what the procedures are in places we plan to visit. Actually, unless you've lots of money, you'll find that you'll probably want to avoid docking in ports or marinas unless you have too. They can be expensive in some (most) parts of the world. You'll probably spend most of your time sitting on your own ground tackle (anchor) in some empty bay or other!

  4. you need to contact the harbor master or the dock master in the ports that your planning on visiting
