  1. If you pick it off a rack, then you should be able to take it home that day... because if they don't have it in a box to assemble, then you can usually buy the display model. And if your were also asking how long it takes to assemble, well it would vary of course.. But if you follow the directions, it shouldn't be too hard or take longer than 30minutes to an hour.

  2. When me and my friend bought his bike we rode it straight out of Target. And I did this as well when I purchased my bike from Wal-Mart. So it shouldn't take any assembly time.

  3. It depends on the type and style of your bike, plus your bike knowledge. I'm still a beginner at bike building so a simple childs sidewalk bike with coaster breaks and training wheels might take me about 20-30 minutes to assemble and youth or adult bike with gear shifts and adjustable breaks and such would probably take me about an hour.

On the other hand I've seen expierenced people do the same bikes in 10-20 minutes - regardless of the size.

Most retailers offer assembly on site but you need to ask around to see who charges for assembly and who does it free and what the wait period is.

Also as many of the other answerers are saying you can often get pre-assembled bikes right off the rack that you can take home same day - but some customers are cautious - just make sure you check it over really good for anything that could need adjusting before you go. Or it never hurts to ask for a box (to do it yourself) or to request an assembly by the store.
