As you can see in the title, I'm getting a cat today. Are there any tips from cat experts? Some people say I should feed my cat raw meat and stay away from dry foods. I also hear that feeding my cat tuna too much will make it sick. How often should I? Also, is milk good for a cat? Please help! Any information you can!

  1. Dry food is best for your cat, but it doesn't hurt to give some moist food occassionally, including a small amount of raw meat, not too much tuna or fish as it is not good for them...two weeks apart is probably the very most you should give it.  Milk is not good for your cat either...pure, fresh water is the best.  Make sure you get its rabies shots...indoor or out door cat.  Occassional dry catnip is fun for them, again only twice a week and only a teaspoonful at a time. Treats can make up for 5% of your cats diet, but don't overdo it.  You can experiment with different foods, as each cat has its individual likes and dislikes in its diet..just like humans.  Lots of love and attention is part of the recipe too.

  2. Get feeding instructions from the breeder. It's best to keep a new cat on the same thing they have been eating. Milk will give them diarrhea. Switching cat food will give them diarrhea. Too much of anything & they might throw up. You'll learn not to give them too much of a treat, after you've cleaned it up second hand.

  3. Feeding your cat a raw diet requires a certain amount of preparation and also requires adding necessary supplements.  It's more work than most people would want to undertake.  Because canned food has more moisture than dry, it is often recommended over dry food (cats in nature get most of their fluids from their food).  If you decide to feed canned food, you should avoid those with gravy because the gravy has lots of carbohydrates, which cats don't need.

I actually feed my cat dry food because it's easy and he likes it.  I avoid dry foods with animal by-products as the main ingredient, and I look for a high percentage of protein (read the labels).  My cat's favorite is Purina Naturals.  I provide him lots of fresh water at all times (I have a Drinkwell Pet Fountain, which he loves).

Milk is not good for cats because they lack an enzyme that is necessary to digest it.  There is milk made especially for cats, however.  My cat's favorite brand is CatSip.  It is made to be digestable for cats, and my cat just loves it.  I give him an ounce or two as a treat once or twice a day.  I warm it slightly in the microwave and then stir it.  It's his favorite treat.

Congratulations on your new cat.  I hope you have many wonderful years together.

  4. There are alot of people who are fond of a raw meat diet. I for one, am not. You are going to need to buy a great deal of fresh meat, and be able to store it and portion it out correctly. Your cat will need to eat other things besides just raw meat. I would stick with a good quality dry cat food, supplementing with canned food. Don't buy your cat grocery store food, it's not good quality. I would also not feed your cat tuna, many cats are allergic to it, and it can make kitty quite sick. Too much of it is not good for their systems.

Milk is not good for a cat, and you should not give it to your cat. Cat's systems cannot digest milk properly, and you're cat will end up with bad gas, diahrrea, or something worse. Diahrrea can be potentially deadly, as it will dehydrate your cat. Fresh water and good quality dry and canned food is your best bet.

  5. No milk! No tuna! cats are lactose intolerant so milk is not good for them. fish is high in magnesium which can cause urinary tract problems such as infection and blockage. You can buy a good dry food such as Purina One there are many varieties to choose from if you get a male adult cat you should get the Purina One for Urinary Tract Health and give a can a food twice a week and plenty of fresh water (change the water every day) and cooked chicken or beef is good for your cat...email me with ANY other questions I will be happy to assist.

  6. I actually agree with everything (0) said above.. my cat is actually allergic to tuna.

  7. Well i have 5 cats. All were babies when i got them. Yes we fed them cream and milk when they were young. They drink water now. The oldest we have to give wet food now because she is losing her teeth. So no there is nothing wrong with giving them wet food. Yes you can  give them tuna. I gave my cats tuna for a while. But the cost adds up. While they are young give then milk water and wet food. Have the cat sleep with you. It will love it. Get them some toys they will like that to. Good luck with them.

  8. Please, instead of buying a cat, go to Animal Regulation (The Pound) and get your cat there.  You will be saving a life!

I would consult my veterinarian concerning diet.

  9. milk is usually not the best diet unless they are kittens. if thats the case then the kitten formula is the most ideal desicion. dry food, in my opinion is the best solution. it doesnt rot their teeth as fast as wet food. i have two cats and i leave dry food out all day and only feed them half a can of wet food a night. just to give them a little treat they love it. good luck cats are amazing friends
