I'm buying a digital camera soon so do I need to buy a memory card?

Well I might buy a digital camera tomorrow but do I have to buy those SD memory card thingys?

what are they for anyways?

and do I really need it?

don't buy the memory card before you buy the camera cuz it might be an xd memory card you need. yes you need a m emory card because if you dont have one you will only be able to hold like 5 pictures on your camera. i have a 1G memory card and it holds like..2000 pictures or less and 2G hold about 4000 i think. you can buy smaller ones that hold like 500 pictures like the 256 mb. im not exactly sure how much each costs but when you buy the camera ask the person you buy it from :)

I would invest in one.. it makes transfering, storing, saving and printing photos much easier, plus if your camera breaks then you have all of your photos still... make the investment at lease a one gig..

It's for extra picture storage.

It's always good to have a memory card, because digital cameras wont hold that many pictures. That way, if you're out and about, you can just click away without too much worry that you wont have enough space for all the pictures.

It will depend on the particular camera.   Different brands use different types of cards, so wait to buy the cards till you buy the camera, and it should be on the box.   Some cameras do have a good bit of internal memory, so the card may not be necessary, but will make it easier to take large number of photos.   also, some cheaper brands may not use a card at all, but If you are planning on taking decent photos and having a camera to use for several years, I'd recommend buying a decent one to start with.  And make sure to buy the proper memory card....Also, the speed of the card affects how fast you can take pictures with the camera,  so the cheapest card isn't always the best choice.

You don't need a memory card for a Digital Camera.  

The only reason you need a memory card is if you are taking HUGE pictures with your camera.. and who wants huge pictures anyways.

you can get at least 100-200 pictures on your camera without a memory card if it's set at a smaller size

If you use a memory card you can hold about 300-400 pictures.

The only reason why I'd want to get a memory card in the future is if I'm going a long distance vacation and there is no computer around to download the pictures to.

Yes they come in very handy cause most digital cameras only hold a few pics.Also to get them printed in the store you would need to use your SD card  4 them to transfer the pics 4 printing.They have good prices for SD cards at Wal-Mart and Target I got my 2GB 1 at Wal-Mart for $20 and it holds a lot of pictures I have over 700 hundred on there right now.

when you get a digital camera there is a certain amout of memory on them and then you can dl'd the pics to your computer and then to a CD to get them printed but its much easier to use a memory card, they are not expensive anymore and they hold a ton of pictures and its easier to take them to a store like wal*mart to get them printed. Yes!  Because without a memory card most cameras will only hold like 12-14 pictures!  Plus you can just pop the card out and right into your computer=)

One will most likely come with your camera, but those memory cards only hold like 20 pictures. SO if you're on a big trip or something, it'd be too much of a hassle.

So yes, I would buy a memory. Ask the sales person to tell you what kind of memory card you would need.

And the memory card is where all your photos go after you take them. It's the storage place for your camera. This is the thing you would put into a photo printer at the drugstore if you wanted to print some pictures.

So it's something you definitely need, and when you buy a nicer memory card, you will be hold hundreds of photos. Which means not as much deleting!

You should defiantly buy a memory card, most digital cameras now have onboard storage (mine has 24 Mb) but its not anywhere near what you should have, i would suggest at least 1 Gigabyte, but it depends on the features of your camera, how many megapixels? (a higher number will produce a larger file size), can it record videos? if your going to use it for that to i would get at least a 2 Gb.
