Hi, I was thinking of Canon or Nikon because I want a pretty good semi-pro one. I've checked Canon 400D and Nikon 60D, and they both seem very very good, the Nikon is only slightly cheaper. Please can somebody explain to me which one I should buy (pleaase dont be brand-biased) and what the problems are with each one? Thanks so much.

  1. If this is your first dslr, I would definitely recommend going with the Nikon D40. If you get the D40 from Amazon, it is only $450, with a 18-55mm lens. And because it is so cheap, it would give you some extra cash to buy lenses, etc.

The D40 is exactly like the D60, except less pixels, which wouldnt matter unless you are a professional and are making HUGE prints.

One thing to keep in mind is the D40 does not have a motor inside it, so it is limited to Nikon AF-S and AF-I lenses. This should not be a big problem unless you already have lenses that you want to auto-focus with the D40. If you do not, than stick to buying from Nikon's large collection of AF-S and AF-I lenses. note: Nikon D40 can still operate other lenses, just you will have to manual focus.

The D40 is a great camera to start with. Go for it!

  2. I'm a Canon guy myself, so what I will tell you is this:

    Both companies are good

Do you need the latest model?

If not, consider getting the model before the one you listed

that way you'll have some money left over for accessories or some money to save up for accessories

I do not know about the lense mount for the Nikons, but for the Canon there are 2 types

    EF & EF-S

The EF is for the 35mm and Full Frame(ff) digital cameras.

The EF-S is the crop cameras, such as the 400d

Crop Cameras can use both the EF & EF-S lenses, but the 35mm and ff digital CAN only use the EF lense. I believe that you can use the EF-S w/the 35mm and ff camera with the

Canon Extension TUBE EF 12 II but you'll lose some light.

So the downside is that if you decide to get into film, there is the possibility that if you buy EF-S lens, it will not be compatible with the film camera or future ff camera you may or may not buy.
