I'm exclusively breastfeeding and I really would prefer one without hormones. I've read how some of the hormones can pass into breast milk but supposedly its not enough to matter. I don't really believe that and I don't want my child exposed to extra hormones just so he wont have another sibling too early.

I've used the FAM (fertility awareness method, charting, rhythm, call it what you will,) in the past but it seems like there is so much work and I don't always have time for that.

What have your experiences been with other birth control methods?

  1. The Mirena is a hormone based IUD.

My personal recommendation is to continue with the FAM.  I assume you have read the book, "Taking Charge Of Your Fertility"  she has the shortcut charting method - you don't have to do it everyday, just the days you might be fertile.

    Good luck.

  2. If you don't want anything with hormones and you don't want to use any type of charting or rhythm method, the only options would be condoms or another barrier method (sponge, cervical cap) or a vaginal suppository.  Congrats on your new baby!

  3. I've breastfed for 11 months and have an Mirena  IUD...I love it...no periods...if I do have a period it last for a few hours one day and it's gone, nothing to remember to take, safe while breastfeeding, can't feel it during s*x for either party...and it lasts up to 5 years or shorter if you have it taken out. Best of luck!

  4. IF you want no hormones I agree about the cooper IUD.  It is good for 10 years, the only downfall is that is causes heavier periods and cramping.  I prefer the Merina but it does have a small amount of hormones that go directly to the uterus.  It is good for 5 years and reduces your periods and cramping.

  5. get a copper IUD, it has no hormones at all and you don't have to worry about it for up to 10 years, but it can be taken out at any time if you want another baby and then conceive right away(b/c no hormones) I just had mine taken out after 2 years cuz we are ttc #2!!
