First a little background I have a pit bull who is 7 years old. He weighs like 85 pounds and has very strong teeth. When I lived at my old house with him, he never tried to break out of the corral or the barn he stayed in if I left the house over night. But when I moved, I put him in his new cage when I would leave the house. He went crazy cause it was a new house and he kept breaking out of the cage. We first built a wood corral and he ripped the wood and broke out in like ten minutes. Then we bought a huge medal cage, and he ripped the medal apart and broke out of that. So ever since he has been staying in my bedroom when ever I leave my house.

Here's my problem, in about a week I'm leaving for 2 nights, and I can't leave him in my room for that long, cause he'll have to go to the bathroom. So i'm taking him back to my old house (cause my mother and brothers still live there), and I'm leaving the dog in the barn he use to stay about three years ago. I'm afraid that since he's so use to breaking out of things that he'll break out of the barn, and if he does he'll run away. So my question is do you guys think that he'll break out. Maybe someone else has experienced this and could give me their opinion.

  1.    Seem to me that you have on your hands a potentialy dangerous dog!

  2. is there a chance your famly could keep hm indoors,,or you could kennel him,,

if not then if he never broke out of the barn before, then more than likely he will not this time,,maybe he just did not like beimg confined in a very small space like a crate,,in the barn he can freely move around ,which is what he is used to.

  3. This is totally an opinion but I have had a similar situation. I do not think that your dog is going to break out of the barn.Dogs hate change so when you moved, he was unhappy with his new surroundings and tried escape. It also sounds like people are spending less time with him. I had a similar situation with my dog. When I moved, he tried to escape from the yard and when he did, he would wander in the direction of the last place that we lived. He got over it in time when he realized that the new place had a MUCH larger yard which he could dig up. Does he have more space or less space at the new place? Are people spending more or less time with him? If you provide him with the same amount of attention and have a space that is similar to the last, I think that he will get over it and stop being a little escape artist. If this is not the case,  think that it is a good idea to take him back to his other home and he will probably not try to escape. Dogs are creatures of habit and they hate change.

I also want to add that it sounds like you are an excellent pet owner. You have tried everything to keep your dog contained and it is not your fault that he wants to escape. Don't stress... no matter what you decide, you will make the right decision. Good luck to you.

  4. Your dog has a huge separation problem it sounds like.

You are right leaving him in a room alone for 48 hrs is way to long.

But you are taking a huge risk leaving him that long in a barn also.  He has shown you that he can escape.

What you must start doing and I am not so sure that you have enough time to do it completely is to start leaving him for a minute then coming back and be very nonchalant about your return . gradually increase the time until he is able to be alone for an hour or 2 before you return.

This dog will never be able to stay confined long.  He is a large active dog and keeping him confined is not good for him. He will get in trouble that length of time.

I think that the best solution is to put him in a boarding kennel for the days you will be gone.  At least there will be others around him and they will keep to the routine that you give them.

  5. Gee i have no idea.

  6. If he used to live there, he will remember the place.  If he knew your family before, he will remember them now.  I think he will be fine.  Just be sure that he is fed and watered.
