I'm confused I was always taught the U.S. was made up of fifty states?

I always though the U.S. was made up from fifty states, but then I see this suspicious, shady looking black guy on t.v. say he has been to 57 states with one left to go. Whats this all about? Did the us claim more land? Ha Ha Ha Please help! I must be out-of-date.

There are 50 States but there are other American territories such as Puerto Rico, Guam, Virgin Islands, etc.

The US also has five other territories, these are Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Guam, and the Northern Mariana Islands.

In total that's fifty-seven states, territories and districts.

Don't be so darn literal. Conventions of speech that are not literally accurate like "Fine, thank you" and "What a beautiful baby" are useful and usual. To insist that they be literally true is to strip them of their usefulness and then laugh at their nakedness. This is a nasty impulse and should be supressed.
