  1. With "Pie" and "Tie" the important thing is not that it is i followed by e but that it is a terminal e. (an e at the end.)

What we teach our kids is that Terminal E makes the vowel "say its name."

Thus Pie, Tie have the "eye" sound.

Poe, Toe has the "oh" sound.

Ache,  has the "ay" sound (in most words, the a uses a terminal Y, not a terminal e, for the same purpose-May, way, Day, Stay.

(The only really exception to this is ue, which e turns into "ooo"

That's because all English's -ue words are really French-due, rue, glue, blue.)

that terminal e trumps everything else going on in the small word.

  2. IE soulds like E like in priest.

  3. English has more sounds than letters. For this reason, second vowels are often used to show a different sound. I don't know what language your phonetic understandings are from, so I can't show you, but the "I" in "lit" and "lite" have different sounds. The "E" is how we know that. The same goes for "pet" and "pete."

  4. i sometimes compensate by using the length of the word to understand it but is not always the 'case.
