I'm confused on my wireless router and my etherfast cable/dsl router?

I had a cable/dsl router. I bought a wireless one so all the other computers in the house didn't have to have a wire dragging from theirs to mine. If I had a successful install with the main computer, how do you manually or automatically get the other computers to work through my wireless router? I thought the whole point was I didn't want all the wires? Everywhere I read, it shows me using wires from the other computers to the wireless router. :( I'm confused. thanks.

  1. If you happen to have bought a linksys wireless router which i highly recomend. They have the best customer servise i have ever experienced. As this is a long process i think it would be best for you to call them. 800-326-7114. They are great.

  2. u need a Wi Fii enabled on your computer dude.

  3. If your modem is modem/router, then you have to put it in bridge mode so basically it will be a dumb modem not a smart router anymore, Call your ISP for assistance on this. If you don't do this then your modem will not route data correctly.

  4. Home type "wireless routers" are really 4 things - a router (to route packets between the internet and computers), a switch (to connect usually up to 4 computers by cable), a wireless access point (to connect computers without cable) and a DHCP server (to give the connected computers their IP addresses).

So you can connect computers to them with cable or you can connect computers to them without cables or you can mix - some computers with cable and some without.

If one computer is near the router, use a cable.  Get wireless adapters for the computers that don't have them and are too far to run cable.  (Make sure that the router is out in the open where it can get lots of cool air - they get hot and need to ventilate.  If a good router overheats it will shut down until it cools off.)

  5. You need wireless adapters in the other computers and install the software that comes with it, that should then connect you.

  6. You will need to add a WIFI card to any desktop computer that you wish to receive the WIFI signal from your router.  Also, make sure that the WIFI is turned.  Below is a link to a Tiger Direct page.  Click on items 4 or 5.  These are WIFI cards.  Read the decryptions.  This will give you a little better idea of what you are looking for.

    http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/...

You will probably also want to set up some type of encryption so that your neighbors won't be able to see and us your WIFI signal.  To do this you must access your routers software.

To access a router, just type it's IP (web address) into your browser's address bar.  The address will look something like this:(192.168.X.X).  You will need to replace the X's with the actual address numbers.

To locate this address, go the the command prompt  Start/All Programs/Accessories/Command Prompt.  At the prompt, ie, the little blinking line, type  "ipconfig /all" without the quotes and hit enter,  Next, look for the DHCP (Dedicated Host Control Protocol) server.  Write this number down, it is the IP that you will be typing into your address bar.

Now look for the routers security settings, and set up WPA encryption.  You will be required to generate a KEY.  Write this KEY down, you will need to enter it into any computer that connects to your router via WIFI.

Once you have done the above, you should be ready to go.

    Hope this helps.
