I'm considering moving to London for a year; where do I start?

I've visited England and absolutely LOVE it!! I'm seriously thinking about moving there for perhaps a year and maybe get it out of my system. Has anyone done this and what tips do you have for me? Where do I even begin, i.e., how do I look for an apartment (flat) or job while I'm still on this side of the pond? I have no contacts in England and would be going by myself with perhaps my 15 year old daughter joining me at some point. Any advice would be greatly appreciated -- thanks!

  1. You need to decide which region of the UK you'd like to live in. I personally would recommend living outside London in a village like Guilford which has its own community but accessible to the big city. .and then contact employment agencies in that city/village.  You could email your CV and make a time to call them directly.  They should be able to recommend letting agencies or even a house/flat share during your stay.

  2. DONT MOVE TO LONDON move some where within a half an hour drive to london or train to londo.

    1) Houses / flats very expensive

    2) VERY Hight crime rate. Shootig and gun crime daily.

    3) Its a DUMP/Smells/BAD Horrible tasting water,

I sugest northern England. Peacfull but still exciting. Cheap housing, But becareful of big citties again high crime.

I live in Whitby which is North yorkshire,

Seaside town famous for when dracula was inspred from

The tap water is mountain water the same you pay for in bottles.

    Lots of green landscape.

Im 50mins closest airport. 3 hours big airport.

    30mins from big city.

    Friendly people.

Northern people are more friendly and talk to strangers wheras southerners ignore everyone and are rude,

People are very nieve when it comes to London

Think its like what it is on the movies. Wrong RATS,SMELLY,DIRTY,CRIME,

  3. well shepherds bush is a good place to start

you can find reasonable prices there. search for rent a flat in London' online and you will find some real state sites online.

Jobs... well that depends on where you are from. Europeans doesn't have problems, but if you are from someplace else then you have to have a work visa. and beside, most of the companies which are hiring need to see you for an interview. so my best guess is you should have money for at least first 6months of your stay until you settle properly and then you would be able to find jobs and other things.

    good luck.

  4. Visiting somewhere & living there are two different things but the first thing you will need to establish is if you need a visa to live & work in the UK.

You could contact your nearest British Embassy for more information, if you need to apply for a visa you'll need to contact them for the application.

I am assuming from your language you're American, this is a website for American ex-pats in the UK:
