  1. You'll find a few kids (more than you might think) along the way that will be technically classified for services under "ED" but will have many autistic tendencies.  A lot of kids you want to look at your school psych and question "are you sure he isn't classified wrong?"  because you'll see similarities in the field.

I've worked with kids who have had ED diagnoses, and kids with autism, and some things pop up the same every time:

When they get upset, angry, or worried, they follow a similar crisis pattern.  It starts with tactile defensiveness, progresses to sensitivity to noise and sometimes light input, and repetitive behaviors.

When they open up emotionally to someone, it's a certain individual for an unknown reason.  The link can close for no apparent reason, as quickly as it opened.

When they perseverate on something, it's global, even with ED kids, at least in my experience.

  2. Because schools want to put autism kids in these 'behavioral' classes because in these classes, schools usually don't 'teach' them. They don't really help them at all.

Most parents don't know this. Schools throw the autism kids in there so they won't have to fool with them.

Ask the person who told you this and see what their answer is. Also go to www.wrightslaw.com  and search there to find your answer.

Also go to www.schwablearning.org and sign up to post on their parent to parent message board. You will gets lots of answers there.

  3. I totally disagree with jc!!!  I'm a special ed teacher and have taught ED and Autism Self Contained Classes.  The reason it is being discussed is because some of the behaviors and techniques are the same for both disabilities.  Similar to learning a reading strategy that will work for both LD and MiMD students, it just makes sense.

    Try visiting a classroom sometime.

  4. Why the h**l are you taking Erectile Dysfunction classes?

  5. Some have the misconception it is because of maladaptive behavior in some autistic people. Some professionals are still in the dark ages about autism, and blame the mothers,it was called refrigerator mothering, about 30 years ago.You need to reeducate your teacher.

  6. because it  mightbe to give  a idea. on how to handle someone with autism.
