I use the term vegetarian very very losely. I'm 15 and became a vegetarian 6 months ago (I was 14). I was going to just wait till I move out to college when I'm 18 to go more strict but I don't want to wait that long. I think I could move to a stricted vegetarian because I have became more adjusted to becoming a vegetarian.

I would like to know about animal rennet and vegetarian cheeses. do the cheeses at the deli counter animal rennet? How about kraft?

Also what is a list of animal products you look for in foods that I shouldn't eat.

Anyother information

  1. Become a vegan;

Can't eat anything that contains eggs, milk, or meat.

    =]

  2. Just say away from meat and eggs everywhere

  3. just eat lettuce and wash down your lettuce with a lettuce smoothie.

  4. You have to ask about cheese at the deil counter - it depends on what brands they carry.  The biggest thing is learning to read ingrediants.  Check cheese for rennet (I believe Kraft is fine.  Mostly I eat Tilamok)  Check all soups for broth - many use beef or chicken, even in things like 'vegetable' soup.  At many rices too.  And most Hostess products have beef fat.

The biggest thing to look out for in gelatin.  It's in everything.  Jello, skittles, junior mints, starbursts, gummy bears, most yogurts, etc.  It's ground up joints, cartalidge and other bits from animals.

It's not food, but I personally also avoid leather and candles made with tallow.  I also only eat eggs that are vegetarian fed and cage free.

  5. Alright here is a link that shows all hidden animal products in food.

Most of those things are for vegans.

The main things Vegatarians have to look out for is rennet (like you said) and Gelatine.

I too am a Vegatarian trying to become stricter and maybe vegan.

    Good Luck

  6. ~ A vegan will not eat cheese because it comes from cow milk.

    No:

    Honey

    Eggs

Jello-(has gelatin, avoid all gelatin it comes from cartilage, bones and connective tissue of animals)

Lecithin-( it can come from plants but majority (99%) of the time it comes eggs)

Casein (Caseinate)-It is a milk protein, very commonly used in a lot of foods.

    Whey- derived from milk

These things are in A LOT OF FOODS you find in the grocery store.  You will start to see how many of your options decrease because of these ingredients that are not vegan friendly.

  7. well if you were to become more strict wouldnt that be called a vegan...................

  8. im 14 and im vegetarian. not vegan. Just look around the supermarket, theres usually one brand of eggs and dairy products which are vegetarian. I always read the back of things to check the ingredients. You could always go to a specialty store, that way you know its vegetarian.
