I have done some research on the two rifles and just wonderig which one is the best for varmit hunting and also roo/pig hunting? Also the quality of the rifle. I dont want to have to replace parts, just because they are c**p or not very good(like a new stock, trigger or anything like that). An also im looking for a scope that will best suit this rifle. Some brands that i have checked out are Leupold and Swarovski and there are probably more. At 3-9x 40mm or 3-9x50mm. The price range im kinda prepared to pay for the whole lot would be around $1100 (rifle and scope($600)) or could be a little more.

  1. i would definitely go with the remington it is just a better quality and you probably wouldn't have to replace any parts   and what ever u want for a scope

  2. go for the rem, they are built well, and you can get plenty of spares for them if something does go wrong, every smith know how to work on a remington. and as for optics, leupold may look good in the day, but the glass in them is c**p and they are built like a coke can, if you can afford to save the extra go for a Nightforce NXS or even better a Zeiss, Germans and neighboring make the best glass hands down. if i was kitting up a new field rifle i would go Tikka T3 Lite stainless with optilok rings and a zeiss victory Diavari 2.5-10x50 T* with Illuminated Reticle. should shoot better than sub moa out of the box, and better when worn in, full floated out of the factory, and Sako quality all over it. if you get a harris bipod your buying the best and you dont nee to worry about extra swivel studs.

  3. I would never buy a Savage if I could afford a Remington 700.  The Savage rifles are very accurate, but I hate their stocks, and I remember when you could save a great deal of money buying a Savage rifle, now they're the same price as a Remington.  Remington 700's are the best action available, look at what most all snipers use, and competitiion/benchrest shooters use.  And for a scope, in my opinion you can't get any better than Leupold for the money, amazing scopes, much more affordable than Swarovski, Zeiss, etc.  Nikon and Burris are also good scopes worth checking out as well.  I've owned several Remington firearms, and NEVER had a problem with any of them regardless of how old they were or how dirty they were. good luck with your choice, you'll be happy with either, just get which ever one fits you better.

  4. G'day mate i own a Remington 700 sps in a .223 varmint with a Burris l.r.s. signature select rifle scope 4x16x44 ballistic plex  with posi lock it has the hold over point for up to 500 to 600 meters you can go a bit further but you have to guess i did shoot a roo with it,it was my longest shot about 750 meters.leupold are good scopes but Burris are better and really good optic just like the night force scopes.Leupold only have a 7 pound spring in them and burris has 14 pound spring, mine come with a posi lock that locks the inner tube and stops it from moving even if you drop the gun it wont loose it's zero. But you don't have to use it because it still comes with a 14 pound spring. They are around the same price a Leupold, but i brought my Burris scope from the states on e bay.there are other sites you can google for them. The scope i brought was worth 1300 here in Australia i got mine for 650 on the net that was with postage. But go for the sps you will love it.Shop around on the net you can get good bargain on Burris scope's.But for pigs it will have to be a head shot mate or get a bigger rifle like a 243. cheers mate

  5. Remington all the way,

also the Leupold VX-II 3-9x50 is $565.00 in Australia, so if you're in America i guess it would be ~$200 less.

  6. A better choice of caliber for Varmint Hunting is the 243.* Either Brand is fine, whichever one you like best.* The same goes for your choice of scope.*

  7. Both are fine rifles.... You could drive yourself nuts trying to figure out whats best...  I like Remingtons but will concede the Savage has its finer points....

I bought a Remington 700 SPS and topped it off with a Nikon 4-12X50 scope.... Generaly a 3-9X40 is fine for all around use.....

Leupolds and Swarovskis are very nice scopes but are expensive... Nikons are decent, have given me good service and have been a pleasure to use....

The .223 is an excellent choice.... Be sure to check out this cartridge guide....

  8. Both are good guns.  I own a 700 SPS.  The scope rings that came with the gun are the cheap aluminum kind that I would recommend upgrading to steel.  Also the Remington scope that came with the gun is alright for starters, but for accuracy and reliability I would advise upgrading to a Leupold scope.

My logic in purchasing the 700 is that military and police forces have used this system for a while now and it has been tested and proven very effective and reliable.

  9. The Remington without question. And Leupolds are great, and go for the x50mm if the price isn't to big of an issue. The greater field of view is always nice.

  10. Id go with the Savage.

They both have cheapish stocks but the savage accu-trigger is amazing. Also i think the Savage 10fp is free floated out of the factory where the 700 sps isn't (might be wrong on that). The savage also has an extra sling stud to put a bipod on without getting in the way of a sling.

With remington i honestly think you're just paying extra for the name when the savage is just as good or better.

  11. If $ is a concern then go with the savage. I've always been pleased with the ones i've owned. .223 is the logical choise for varments but for hogs & coyotes i would chose a .243
