  1. add a lot of words and variety of colors, it might be good to find a common character of theme that the children enjoy.

  2. Just make it colourful and welcoming. <3

  3. pillows!! i had a teacher that had whole c**p load of pillows, bean bags and those back pillows with the arms in her room and every time there would be a movie or we would get a book read to us we'd circle around with the pillows, it was AWESOME.

big animal cut outs. maybe even a theme?! like a jungle theme, or a beach theme, disco theme.

maybe even get your cute little third graders involved, by asking them what they like. to make a list of stuff they enjoy like clouds, animals, balloons whatever and interpret all of it in the room design. :) or you can have a group discussion!

  4. Choose a theme and let creativity lead the way... dont decorate the whole lot, leave enough for the kids to be able to add their touch to the room through themed projects etc... Goodluck :)

  5. Have fun with it. Creativity is a huge plus here.

Last year the second grade teacher at my school did her classroom in a tree house theme. She and her boyfriend actually came into school and made a big tree in one corner in the room with paper with the branches and leaves going across the ceiling, and had "tree house passes" that each of the kids got before school started in August so they could get into the "secret second-grade clubhouse". The kids *loved* it.

Make sure to integrate learning-based type stuff with the theme. For example, with the tree house theme, you might do the classroom rules in big, bold metallic marker on a few "tree branches" on one of the walls, or you might do math manipulatives with laminated paper leaves or something.

Don't make the theme totally complete, though - you want to leave some room to do seasonal decorations.

Above all, keep it fun - your third graders will be spending a LOT of time in that classroom and you want to make it a place where not only learning will take place, but that they'll be drawn into and want to be in.

  6. I'm not sure what this has to do with homeschooling, but if you are decorating for 3rd graders be sure to use lots of bright colors, and include things that have educational value, like place value charts, Historical timelines, Cursive alphabet borders, steps for multiplication of 3 digit numbers, etc.
