Question:

I'm depressed - what can I do to snap out of it?

I've been searching in vain for a job for about 6 months now, I'm severely in debt and I just don't see where my life is going anymore.

I don't want to see my friends or boyfriend...or anyone. I just want to lie in bed and disappear.

I've checked out websites and they say encouraging yourself to socialise and go out is the best thing to do - but I don't have the money to go anywhere.

What do I do?

  2. You need to go to your GP and he will refer you to a councellor. You can't just "snap out of it" it's not that easy.

I understand, i've been there. I know what it's like to just not want to get out bed, not want to talk to people and just want to be in the background. You need to talk to someone, properly explain how you feel. I've had councelling, give it a go. Things can only get better, i know its difficult but TRY and be positive. You can email me if you want too also.

As for the job situation, get your CV printed out and take it EVERYWHERE. A job earning a little, is better then no job. If you go to a job interview with a negative attitude, there will be a negative effect. You CAN get a job, i know its difficult but the harder you try the more chance you have. I'm not saying you aren't trying though!!

  3. Temping agencies? They find me work so you'll DEFO get it.

  4. Sorry to hear you are feeling so down.  I think most people have felt like you do at some time in their lives - I know I have.  You don't say how old you are or whether you live at home still, but I can offer a few (hopefully helpful) pointers to you from my own experiences and from helping my daughters.  Have you created a C.V. of your employment history?   My 19yr old daughter emailed her C.V. to all agencies in our town, and went into the agencies to take their tests, i.e. typing tests. She regularly went into town to go around the agencies, and although  this is sometimes really frustrating,  it shows the agencies that you really do want a job, and they respond to you better if they see that you are keen.  Is there a local newspaper with a job section? the local library usually have copies of all local newspapers if you don't want to buy one. What work are you looking for?  could you try something different, have a think about what else you are interested in.  Are you entitled to any financial benefits whilst you are unemployed?  Check with your local job centre and ask for advice on claiming job seekers allowance or something similar - if you don't ask, you won't get!  Is your debt problems through credit cards or borrowing?  Try to contact the debtors and explain your situation and offer to pay them, say £5 a week until you have a better job.  Most credit card agencies are pretty good with arranging a pay scheme, provided you let them know what is happening.

Lastly, pay a visit to your G.P.  Explain how you feel and ask for a course of antidepressant medication just to help you over this bad time in your life.  You can always stop them when you become more settled with a job.  There is no shame in getting help with antidepressants, that is what they are there for, and you don't have to tell anyone that you are taking them.

I am sure that your boyfriend and friends know that you are short of money for going out,  but how about arranging a film night at your place for example, where you don't have to spend any money, your friends could bring munchies, and it can really turn out to be a great night.  Take it in turn to go to each others' houses for the evening.  I know that it may not sound too exciting but it won't be for ever.

Good luck.  Hope this has helped a bit. :)
