  3. Of course you're joking, but there is actually a serious answer:

    There is one important farting incident recorded in literature, in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, of the 13th century (I kid you not), in which a group of monks declared that they would share everything in common, and devised upon a way to share a f**t...A wheel was set up, with hollow spokes, so that if you farted at the centre, the gas would travel up the spokes at the perimetre, for individual monks would sniff as the wheel turned.

    That was probably the world's oldest written f**t joke.
