  2. For equipment used to catch and handle reptiles, check this web page:

  3. To capture replies and amphibians herpetological arrays are used.  Look here to see and click on "herpetological study" at the top of the page and scroll down for photos of the arrays, and there is also some more info in the report on how we capture them.

  4. Herpetology offers benefits to humanity in the study of the role of amphibians and reptiles in global ecology, in particular in the role of amphibians as long-range ecological warning devices (their decline worldwide is the subject of much study) and the use of the toxins of some amphibians and venoms of some snakes in human medicine. Currently, some snake venom has been used to create anti-coagulants that work to treat stroke victims and heart attack cases.

  5. Herpetologists use a lot of tools that you wouldn't associate with scientists. I have used rubber bands and blowguns to collect lizards. Some herpetologists use glue traps that were designed for mice. All sorts of nets are used for turtles and many amphibians. Snakes are picked up with snake hooks or Pilstrom tongs (originally designed for handling radioactive material). Crocodilians may be netted or subdued with rope and tape. That's just for collecting. Herpetologists also use microscopes, calipers, computers, radio-tracking equipment, and some very ingenious home-made devices to study reptiles and amphibians.
