  1. Watching the MythBusters episode where they determined that cell phone usage is equal to or worse than being intoxicated sealed it for me.

Hope it becomes a law everywhere.

  2. The NHTSA notes that "the data are insufficient to quantify crashes caused by cell phone use specifically, but NHTSA estimates that driver distraction from all sources contributes to 25% of all police-reported traffic crashes."

"The primary responsibility of the driver is to operate a motor vehicle safely," states the NHTSA.

"The task of driving requires full attention and focus. Cell phone use can distract drivers from this task, risking harm to themselves and others. Therefore, the safest course of action is to refrain from using a cell phone while driving," notes the NHTSA.

  3. Chicago is banning cell phone use while driving, because it distracts the driver. Quite a few accidents have been caused because people are busy talking on the phone instead of paying attention to the road.

  4. Driving a vehicle is boring...We sit in a comfortable seat in a temperature controlled box with seemingly nothing to do - a hand on a wheel, a foot on a pedal and look out a windshield...I drive alone most of the time and I can't talk to myself, so I have to listen to some noise from the radio or a CD...Better yet, I can talk with my friends on the cell phone...How cool is that?!!!...EXCEPT...

Driving only takes about 5-10% physical effort, but it demands 100% mental focus...Ever changing conditions to traffic, the roads, the weather, time of day, the terrain, our own mental awareness of these conditions...If I am not completely tuned in to what I have to do to get from here to there, I'm not gonna make it...Talking on a cell phone takes away my focus on the road and in many cases, one hand off the wheel...If I have that many important things that just have to be done while I am on the road, then I'd better get someone else to do the driving...My failure to operate my vehicle safely can result in my death, permanent disability or injury and will otherwise ruin my life...And there is no phone call in the world worth those risks.

    All the best.

  5. Search for info in the States of Oregon, Washington, and Illinois where recent laws have been passed banning the use of cell phones.

  6. sorry idk bc in NC its not banned
