we're pretty friendly, so i hate to say anything to him about this. But I also feel I shouldn't be the only one doing the work. I'm also the type that avoids all confrontations. what do i do?

  1. Sit down and explain you do not mind helping him out from time to time, but you cant do all of the work...

If all else fails, talk to your manager about it...

  2. What would happen if you were suddenly too busy to do all the extra work? What happens when you're on vacation, who does the work then?

I'd talk to him about it, nicely, it doesn't have to be a confrontation.  "Can we divide this differently?"  "I know things have been busy..."  That type of thing.

If you're still getting dumped on, you'll need to talk to your boss.

  3. talk to him one on one and tell him you don't mind doing the job but you need his assistance and if he does not change consult your boss.
