Question:

I'm driving a car, and...

I got my license about 1 or 2 months ago, and since the first time I drove alone I've had no fears about driving. I now feel confident in driving anywhere, whether it be in town or out of. Even if I only got very basic directions on where to go or if I'm lost and have to figure out where I am.

The problem is, though, ever since a bit before I got my license I commonly get dreams about me driving terribly. The first one of these dreams was with my cousin, who's a bit older than me. He drove into a parking lot and told me I could drive. Even though it was illegal, I thought, why not. So, I was running over curb, missing signs, etc.

After that dream the others are blurry but I remember the fact I was driving badly. One time I would accelerate too fast to slow down in time for an intersection/stop sign/whatever. Other times I make dumb mistakes that are frustrating.

So, anyone got any answers?

  1. Your dream truly seems rooted in a conflict between your confidence and the sense of responsbility you have about driving.

Since it started just before you got your license (congralations on that and your apparently safe attitude) it would seem that you had a great deal of concern with handling your driving privileges responsibly.  That may sound odd with the 'misbehavior' you describe with your cousin and the other 'control issues' - but those seem to be projections of a 'what if' nature that came out of your very concern.  Your inner mind portrayed and exaggerated your image in this state to ventilate those very feelings.  That is a feedback mechanism of sorts that helps reinforce your concerns.

Now the dreams continue, despite your confidence.  That may be a continuing warning from within that you should stay close to good sense and not let your confidence get you into situations that would destroy your hard-won confidence - that held by yourself and no doubt by others.  It could also be a form of worry - are you flirting a bit with the edges of good sense in your confidence?  If so, listen to your conscience in this - it may be sending a message in the form of this dream continuing.

The role your cousin plays may be a message of needing to be careful of peer pressure in this.  Others who are close sometimes egg us on or unintentionally encourage mis-steps by their own behaviors - that is something to watch for as well and may be a factor in this imagery.

You are the best judge of how these points may fit, but perhaps they will help you in your understanding.

    All the best to you.

  2. To dream that you are driving a car, denotes your ambition, your drive and your ability to navigate from one stage of your life to another. Consider how smooth or rough the car ride is. Whether you are driving the car or a passenger, is indicative of your active role or passive role in your life. If you are in the backseat of the car, then it indicates that you are putting yourself down and are allowing others to take over. This may be a result of low self-esteem or low self-confidence. Overall, this dream symbol is an indication of your dependence and degree of control you have on your life. To see a parked car in your dream, suggests that you need to turn your efforts and energies elsewhere. You may be needlessly spending your energy in a fruitless endeavour. Alternatively, a parked car my symbolize your need to stop and enjoy life. To dream that you are almost hit by a car, suggests that your lifestyle, beliefs or goals may be in conflict with another's. It may also be symbolic of a jolting experience or injured pride. *Please see Also Automobile.

To see your cousin in your dream, represents something or some aspect of your character that is somewhat familiar. Perhaps you need to spend more time in cultivating and developing some emerging ability or character.

  3. Cars in dreams usually represent your life.  We don't always get things

right in life, and we make mistakes.

    It's just life.  :)
