I have been having trouble with an issues on chemicals and feelings. I ask that if anyone religous is reading this that they try not to convert me because my question is based on Atheism and im really trying to find myself so please respect that. Anyways i know chemicals control our feelings, the problem is lately it's been really getting to my head, like whenever i get happy, i feel bad about it because i feel like im following just a bunch of random chemicals, anyone can give me some help, maybe something to make me feel comfortable feeling emotions again.

  1. Very, very interesting question. I've had some similar questions myself and am not religious. I noted an interesting website below, which I'll look at more later myself. When we lack feeling, we don't function as well on many fronts, and this article says it deals with that question.

The question and the title are two different subjects, the question says you feel but distrust what you feel, as you wonder if its chemically manipulated. If youre feeling emotionless, that's different. I'll take a chance that the actual question is what you want some thoughts on. Your question is brave and unpretentious.

We dont want to be slaves to our emotions, but life is so much more enjoyable with them. We can appreciate music more with emotions, as well as anything of beauty.  They don't control us, emotions mirror back to us and keep us safe, in some instances.

Reality has so much to do with perception, relativity. Who is to say that you are being manipulated by emotions? They are your reactions and thoughts, formulated by your experience and sometimes layers of intuition.

I know sometimes my occasionally overwrought emotions can lead me astray, but when I'm in touch, not hiding from them, I develop as a more mature person.  If I'm feeling PMS-y I know not to give exteme creedence to negative emotions and dont make any big mental conclusions, as in, so-and-so hates me (suddenly). So emotions can be exaggerated chemically but are not the enemy.  Just like a bad outfit; clothing is not the enemy, it was just poorly done. Bad attempt at a joke....

Sometimes the best thing is to back off if I'm feeling anything too intensely, as my mind and emotions have to work as a team.  In literature this is a common theme; head vs. heart. The conclusion is, we need a balance of the two to be healthy.

  2. There have been some very good answers already.

    I would like to add.

Our feelings are based not just on Chemicals swilling around inside of us. Our body's are Electrochemical and we control it. Every thing we experience we chose to perceive it in a certen way. Perception is a very personal thing. So unfortunately there is no simple answer, but you are asking the right questions, and it always important to know what makes you happy. seeking happiness in every moment is everything any one wants. how you find that is up to you.

    p.s.

I do not have any idea who you are, but please realize I am an atheist from Canada i have traveled a fair amount, it was interesting to for me to find out by studying other cultures just how christian based the west really is, for example just our common perception that death is a bad thing was something taught to me from a jaded person, that person has never died so how would they know its a bad thing, so **** it. this goes with so many things we see and do daily, in the west. so keep an open mind to that the very god/gods that you don't want to follow might be influencing you more than you think.and its only though the study of religions around the world that you can start to see these things.I have said to little.

    to summarize, and reiterate.

life is so complicated there are many questions and often to many answer keep an open mind and go with the flow,

  3. Sometimes I even think how much "easier" it could be if there actually was a god to make things... well make sense. Biology is such an amazing way of understanding life, but I've realized that by learning more on the subject, I'm starting to get the mindset that I'm some giant machine, only being able to survive with microscopic tiny machines within me, making me some big emotionless "thing" where my brain is only a control center for functioning. But that's where I start feeling human again, the brain. The brain is amazing because it can never be fully understood. Chemicals and microscopic biological functions may be controlling the "machine" but a simple chemical doesn't (yet) explain where personal, complex thoughts and feelings come from, and being an Atheist, we have no "god" to dump the origin of all of these unexplained feelings on.

I've learned to just be content with being. And with knowing that there is no secret "master" controlling all of my emotions, just me.

I have no idea if this helps you, just sharing my thoughts because your question seems similar to mine.

p.s. I know I'll probably get a million thumbs downs for this but remember, I'm not violating any rules and I'm not putting down any religion. Nor am I pushing my lack of religion on anyone. So if anyone reads this and decides to report it... a serious waste of time.

And I really liked the link in the comment above, very interesting.

  4. the thing about finding yourself is that you need to hear other things. who cares if chemicals are controlling your feeling, this it what thinking to much does, relax and realize "happy" nowadays is a rare feeling. dont be so idle, go out and have some fun and you'll see how much you'll find

  5. If you were actually trying to "find yourself" as you claim to be, then you'd be open to anything, including religion. Do you even realize that your science based atheism is what's causing you to feel so hopeless? Jeeze, all you've done is fulfill the dumb "science is god" atheist stereotype.

  6. What do you mean by chemicals? Is it something you are taking or do you mean neurotransmitters (chemicals in the brain which send messages from point A to point B).

    good luck.
