I've been hired by my friend's neighbour to watch two little kids (ages 10 and 6, 10 year old is a boy and 6 year old is a girl) from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm every day. It's a great opportunity and the kids are great too, but I've never done anything like this before and I'm really nervous.

I've got some questions for anyone that's done this kinda' thing before.

1) What are some creative things to do? (The mum says she doesn't want them in the house much during the day.)

2) There are some places within walking distance, i.e. the pool, the library, a park, and downtown. Where should I take them and for how long? How do I keep an eye on them?

3) I'm going to be there nearly all day, so they're gonna' have to eat! Any lunch/snack suggestions?

Thank you sooooooo much for the help. I can't think of any more questions for now, but any extra information is appreciated too!!

Peace,

Lisa.

  1. Ok here we go...

To start with is their mother giving you any money to help with the cost of things?

If she is maybe take them swimming or just to the park for like an ice cream - but keep them busy.

Maybe pop round before the holidays to talk to them and see what they want to do!

As for food and snacks - are they having breakfast before you get there?

If they are then you should just give them like a sandwhich for lunch.

If they are not then whatever they normally have just stick to routine!

    Good luck

    Any questions just email me!

  2. All the things you listed as nearby are great for kids.

Don't take them to the park for too long if it's really hot.  You can take them to the library for as long as they want to (until they get bored) as long as they are not just playing on a computer there.

Swimming should be kept to about an hour because it is very tiring for kids, even though they are having fun.  Be sure to apply sunblock everytime and watch them like a hawk.  It only takes a few seconds to drown.

Take them outside to have a picnic lunch.  Play in a sprinkler in the yard.  Buy some finger paints and poster board and go outside and paint.  Get some Playdoh and/or arts & crafts.  I'm sure the parents would either buy it themselves or give you cash to get it.

Have them ride their bike/scooter.   Make sure they always wear a helmet and stay outside while they go up and down the street or ride with them so they are safe.

Set up relay races in the yard.  Play with water balloons (be sure to have them clean up the burst balloons).

RE:  Lunch - make sandwiches, bake a pizza, maybe the mom has leftovers from the night before.  Be sure to include a vegetable and/or fruit.
