Question:

I'm filming an outdoor concert. Tips?

I'm filming an outdoor concert that is being held in a park. While I'm not being paid to do it, I'm doing it because I'm a fan, and the venue said I could bring my video camera.

Where should I try to position myself so I can capture a great angle of the band?

Also, how about sound? Since I won't be using a professional microphone, I will need to rely on my camera's microphone. Where should I be to get the best quality sound given my circumstances?

Thanks in advance for the tips!

  1. I would still recommend an external microphone. You will pick up better sound this way.  A shotgun microphone at least will allow you to cut out some of the unwanted sounds from the sides and rear of your camcorder and focus on the sound coming from the stage.  If nothing else you can pick up an inexpensive one for $25-$30.

If you use zoom to get in close with your video you would be better to use a tripod- some of them are quite small and portable.  I even saw a very handy monopod called the Quick Pod on Amazon, you could use it as a "tripod" or use it for over the head shots too. Also try to avoid zooming while you are filming to get a steadier shot.
