My house had the old jack type fone socket when built, but it was changed by B.T. to the standard one in the 80's. I want to fit a new master socket and the simple instructions show where to fit 4, up to 6 coloured wires to it. But my socket that i'm replacing only has two ( orange and white ) connected to it, and two ( black and green ) wires are there but not connected. Should they be? If so, what number should they be connected to?.I'm trying to improve my very poor broadband speed, and was advised that this may help.

  1. These links have excellent wiring descriptions and diagrams to help with sorting out your phone wiring:

  2. it is the orange and white, either way round does not matter. although it is bt's responsibility, it the old one is damaged and not wear and tear, they will charge.

  3. you only need to connect orange & white to the master on the two screews on the back of socket....green & black are for second line

  4. Who told you that changing the master socket would improve your BB speed ? The guy at the shop selling it to you no doubt ?!

First of all it WON'T speed it up at all and secondly, you MUST NOT change the master socket. This is the property of BT Openreach who will charge you for a new socket and the time taken to replace it if at any time in the future your line develops a fault.

  5. Listen to Square Eyes, the BT  OpenReach engineer. The master socket is the property and responsibility of BT and they WILL charge you if they find you changed it yourself at some later point.

Also, changing it will not increase your BB speed, if it is slow, there is a problem elsewhere.

  6. YOU CANT DO IT YOUR SELF CONTACT

YOUR LINE SULPLYER DONT TRY IT

YOU HAVE THE WRONG SOCKET  THE MASTER

    ONLY HAS TWO CONECTIONS

  7. Cut the red wire.

  8. Hi,

I am not sure how this will improve your DSL speed? - If are you replacing some extension wiring?  - - You cannot fit your own master socket, its covered by your line rental if their is something wrong with it contact your service provider, if BT the number is 0800 800 151.

    Hope this helps you?
