  1. Most likely no. Maybe around the French border, but elsewhere, you will need to speak either German or English

  2. You won't get too far... better stick to English...

  3. Well in the part of Germany on the border to France you might be lucky to get along with French.

To be precise in the States of Saarland,Rhineland Palatinate and also in parts of Baden Wuerttemberg.

For the rest of the country you will not find many people speaking French.

  4. your probably better off talking english to them

  5. English will get you further than French but not to say that their are not French speakers there as well, one of my friends there speaks fluent French and English.

I highly recommend if you can speak French than take the time and learn a few basics of German you will find it not that hard having that background compared to none. I spoke French before German and it has helped me a lot as well in learning over the years.

Just trying to speak a few phrases and words will get you a lot further along and liked than to not even try, I know this first hand always using German when I can and seeing how others that do not try how they some times are responded too.

Think about it, in your own Nation would you not prefer a foreigner to at least be able to say to you in your Native tongue I do not speak your language do you speak mine I need help? For example?  That alone will break the ice far better!
