Question:

I'm g*y but my coach is a homophobe! He might kick me off the Badminton team! Someone help!?

Hi I'm on the college badminton team and I'm the star men's singles player. My on-court nickname is even "sonic boom" due to my slam shots. The problem is I'm g*y and I'm thinking of coming out of the closet but my coach is a total homophobe. His attitude is like "g**s, bies, trans, whatever! They're all freaks and should be punished by saline injection! or shotgunned! It's not natural!"

I'm scared that if I come out of the closet he'll kick me off the team. Even when he regularly praises me and says things like "you could very easily make your country's olympic team and win at least silver! or maybe even gold!" I'm scared all his prejudice will change this and he'll kick me off.

I can't take being in the closet anymore and i'd really like to come out. I'd really like some advice on what to do

  1. I don't think he can legally kick you off the team just because you are g*y.

  2. y do u have to tell him?

  3. If you trust in your future don't tell him...

  4. If you're a good player he shouldn't kick you off the team just because of his personal views.

If he does i suggest you ask him what the reason is and if it's remotely homophobic you should make a complaint to whoever is in charge of him.

You shouldn't let this stop you from coming out if it's what you want.

  5. You are in an unfortunate situation.  I would not come out to the coach/team.  Be who you are, but don't set yourself up to be harassed when you could have a future in this sport.  If he does find out, then deal with that.  But, if you come out and he and your other teammates harass you, you could be up a creek so to speak.  The univesity values the coach and the team as a whole first.  Your concerns will ultimately be ignored and he will continue to coach with or without you.

  6. You have a tough decision to make - and from what you've said, you know the pro's and con's of going either way.

It's a choice that you and only you can make.

Much as we all want the coach to change his opinion about g**s, the likelihood of him doing so is slim.  The best that you can hope for is that he will be professional about it. Otherwise talk to you head/principle, school counsellor etc

    Good luck

  7. Make the country's Olympics team, then tell him. I'm sure he'll feel good about himself then.

Alternatively, your badminton coach is the last person who needs to know your sexuality. Coming out does not need to include telling your badminton coach. On the off chance that he finds out and you suddenly get kicked off the team for no stated reason, take him to court. I'm sure your teammates can vouch for the fact that he's stated how good a player you are, and how suspect getting kicked off the team suddenly for no good reason would be. He will lose his job for blatant discrimination, and I'm sure he'll feel good about himself then.

  8. He cant legally do anything about it. and if he does, sue his ***. you can always get another coach

  9. just dont come out til after college I know I'm probably gong to get a lot of thumbs down for this, but trust me. I have a cousin who is g*y and he came out when he was younger and it caused so much hassle to himself. Society isn't always accepting of it. Just wait it out for now..

  10. I would come out to him, just to p**s him off.

He can't kick you off his team. His job is coach you as long as you're willing to learn. His job isn't to judge you.

  11. your sexuality has got nothing to do with your badminton. your coach shouldn't be able to discriminate against you because of it and I'm sure there is probably a law against it.

  12. Ignore him.

He can't kick you off the team just for being g*y.

    That's discrimination.

And if he does you NEED to tell someone.

    Discrimination isn't cool.

  13. It's a mens badminton team; I'm sure he expects a g*y or two and would be used to it.

  14. Keep talking and don't stop until you are at the deans office. That is what I would do. Start a school wide petition if you have to. He has no right to be a bigot pig, especially if he is a professor at a college. Keep yelling and don't shut up until you get what you want. Seriously, not being ironic here. People need to change these opinions, action is the only way anyone will.

  15. If I were you I would just continue to remain in the closet first unless I can get another coach who is not homophobic.

  16. come out to other people at tell them not to tell him

  17. don't say a word, just show up at the next game dressed in pink shorty shorts. if he gives you a problem, threaten to quit the team and join the kite flying club......he won't dare risk loosing his "sonic boom". i bet he leaves you alone. good luck and i hope this helps.

  18. keep Playing with him until he accepts you!

  19. Forget the g*y thing..I'm more  concerned about badminton. Is that even a real sport?!

  20. If you know your coach is a homophobe why come out to him or the team? Use your common sense. I understand you're ready to come out but obviously for this particular instance it's not the right time or place.

  21. Depending on whether your school is public or private and where you live, you may have protection against his discrimination under state or federal law. Any school which receives government funding is entitled to comply with state and federal anti-discrimination and harassment laws.

I suggest you contact campus legal services to clarify your rights and protections. You may even petition to have your coach fired, if anything, for sexual harassment. After all, he should be focusing on helping his players improve, not talking about topics of sexual nature.

I say good luck and go for it!!!! You could be a role model for future students...

  22. Well, let him give you a saline injection, if it will make him feel better. Saline is what they give to you when you are on a drip in hospital so it should be ok. If he wants to shot gun you, then say no.

I'm with the guy above, badminton is a g*y sport. Come on you guys chase after a shuttle c**k which is covered in feathers, doesn't get any gayer than that.

If you are g*y, come out, f your coach.. (not litereally).

  23. I think this is one of these cases where you need to stand up for g*y rights and accept whatever the consequences are. If black people, women, etc, had all kept quiet in the past, where would they be today?

Please announce proudly that you're g*y and if he wants to put you off the team then at least you've stood up for yourself.

Plus I'm sure there's more than one badminton team in your area?

(I'm sure we all look forward to the day when we don't have to sacrifice things that we enjoy cause of homophobic idiots but for now I think you stand up for yourself as a g*y person)

    Good luck xx

  24. isn't badminton a g*y sport anyway?

  25. Weigh your options and make a decision. If you get kicked off or he gives you grief, make an issue out of it.

  26. It could be a problem if you just come out to your friends that you can trust for now. I think the word would spread gradually, and before you know it everyone will find out.

If the coach finds out along the way and do not have the balls to confront you or suddenly sacks you from the team you will have no proof that he legally discriminated. He can always then blame your performance or some other idiotic reason other than the fact that you are g*y.

Tell him you are g*y and that you are protected by law to compete in this sport. If he then wants to insult you or discriminate threaten him with the law.

It is not easy. Although as I said if he finds out via gossip he can discriminate by using other excuses.

    Good luck!

  27. it isnt legal for him to kick u off the team just simply because ur g*y.

he might give u a bit of a hard time over it but hes not allowed to kick u off the team.

so if ur scared of the harrassment all u have to do is tell someone and his *** can get fired.
