i'm getting all 4 of my wisdom teeth pulled PLUS another molar at the same time. only 2 of my wisdom teeth have come in so far. i was just wondering about the amount of pain/swelling that might occur afterwords.

i don't really know why i am so scared. i have had multiple extractions before and dental surgery that was extremely painful. i just need to know what to expect.

  1. What to Expect during recovery

1: 2-3 hours later, the anesthesia wears off and the h**l begins. Swelling also begins. in order to prevent swelling-

BUY FOUR i said FOUR ice packs. use two using both hands, while the other two are in the FREEZER getting cold again. Ice for 1 hour, rest for 25 minutes. Repeat till you go to sleep that night. BY the way, try not to spit.

2: you will probably keep bleeding for 4-6 hours. Make sure to clamp down on gauze for 1 hour to 1 hour and 15 minutes each time you decide to change it out. Make sure to use firm pressure. (drizzling cooled fluid from a tea bag onto the gauze may help clot the wounds up slightly quicker)

3: for the first 24 hours u probably shouldn't brush your teeth. rinsing may increase the chances of ur blood clot to fall out.

4: DO NOT USE A STRAW, try not to sneeze, cough, and restrain from strenuous labor. Like when ur going #2, dont push hard, that can also cause ur blood clots to fall out.

5: obviously take all the medications ur Dentist tells you to take.

6: when swallowing, swallow with ur mouth open. That decreases the suction within your mouth that can cause ur blood clot to fall out.

7: After 24 hours, you may try gargling with lukewarm salt water. After 48 hours, you may try brushing ur teeth again. Again, rinse verY VERY CAREFULLY.

8: Buy Boost nutritional drinks. When served cold, its not too bad and its packed with nutrition..

(i lived off Boost for two days straight after my extractions)

    (and water)

9: Do not use commercial mouth washes for like 72 hours. Even the ones without alcohol in it. it can irritate ur blood clots.

10: don't be nervous. Just prepare for some pain (during recovery) the operation itself is painless. Only some pressure.

If they put you to sleep then u won't feel anything obviously.

11: The reason why u dont wanna unclog ur blood clots is because you put urself at risk of something called a "Dry socket".- its a complication that happens 3-4 days after the procedure. You'll feel moderate to severe pain in the affected sockets, the sides of ur jaw, and towards ur ear canal. You'll taste something nasty, and there will be a putrid smell emitting from the socket. If this happens to you, immediately see ur dentist. Its treatable.

12: dont smoke for a couple weeks after the procedure. smoking increases the chances of getting dry sockets. You probably shoudn't drink either. Alcohol will irritate the blood clots.

13: o yea, dont eat nething warm or hot. the temperature will break apart your blood clots. Especially soup obviously.

Stick with the boost. Best way to go. has protein too, so you shouldn't lose too much muscle mass during ur recovery.

  2. well right after surgery when you're up and about, the drugs they give you are still gonna be affecting you, so it's not going to hurt right away, but it definitly feels weird. A few hours after the meds fade away is when you'll notice the pain, so make sure your doc gives you a prescription for AT LEAST percoset. The pain itself should go away in about 4-5 days, and make sure you rinse your mouth out after EVERYTHING you eat, the last thing you want is dry socket, cuz that means more surgery.  As long as you follow the docs instructions and take care of your mouth you'll be fine, and you should be eating "normally" in about a week. Good luck!

  3. lots of swelling and lots of PAIN!
