I'm getting fired on friday, if I call in sick, do I get to keep my insurance another month?

I am in a salary position in pennsylvania, my employer plans on firing me on friday, to cut down on costs. If I call in sick, will I get to keep my insurance next month if they can't notify me till monday, the 1st of the month?

  1. No, it doesn't get you more insurance just because you didn't show up to get fired.

Well, it really depends on the agreement between you and the employer.  If the relationship is an "at will" type of relationship, they can get rid of you whenever they want and you can leave whenever you want.  The termination of your insurance also depends on the type of plan.  The setup I have at my work is an "at will" employment setup and the insurance terminates as soon as an employee is terminated or resigns.  If you still have a handbook, I would check to see the type of employment setup.  I imagine they have the right to terminate on Friday (if it's an "at will" situation) though and then you would probably be offered COBRA from there.

  4. Your employer is the only one who can answer this question. They are the ones paying (at least some) of the premium.  They are not obligated to continue your coverage past your last day worked. But if you are being laid off, I would assume your calling in sick on your last day, would have little effect on when they would terminate your insurance.

  5. typically not because your cancellation date is based on the "last date worked" for most insurance companies.. so if your last day worked was in may, generally, your insurance would be canceled june 1st unless there were prior arrangements made through the employer and insurance company

    Seeing as how you know you're going to be fired on Friday, it seems that you have already been notified that you're fired.

  7. You will be offered COBRA. That is how you continue your coverage=you pay for it under COBRA. You can be fired whether you show up, or don't. If you are covered for insurance, they have to offer you COBRA benefits, that is the law. usually, COBRA benefits are very costly. You may want to shop around for a personal policy.
