Well, I'm not sure if that would be the best FIRST car. Can anybody tell me if that would be a good idea or not, or more about it. I would really like to know the mpg and how safe it is.

  1. Very bad idea. The car is not really  safe as the engine is in the rear and any car that old is void of any modern safety features.   Also it will be a stick shift, no AC,  probably no power steering, weak brakes, weak heating system, etc.

Any one in good condition may actually command a collector price premium.

  2. good news, bad news?

    good: they are available

    bad news: the price

seems along with many classic cars the prices have never been higher.

first don't buy a new beetle, they are mechanically unsound.

    unreliable (break down a lot)

the older ones are being restored and bought up left and right.

simply put they are too expensive right now to own as a first car/ daily driver.

    for $4,000

    look for

98 Acura CL, 98 Ford Mustang V6, 98 Honda Accord or Civic, 98 Nissan Frontier or Pathfinder, 98 Subaru Impreza or Legacy, 98 -00 Toyota Corolla or Echo 00

  3. I don't have any statistics to back this up, but I've heard of many deaths from head-on collisions in the old beetles. Also from running into solid objects, and not even at such high speeds. Me, I wouldn't own one.

  4. The last Classic Beatle I saw was about 20 feet in the air, doing a double flip after hitting a little bitty berm on the side of the road.  Not much up front to protect you in a collision, either. They are not the safest choice.

  5. I guess you should also check insurance quotes for the car before buying one, for example here: http://autoinsurance.noneto.com

Young drivers usually have much higher rates than others. And it depends from car.

  6. extremly save  35 plus miles per gallon , there are companies that rebuild older beatles to updated standards . mechanically , very inexpensive to repair . if buying used one check rust underneath . very common unrepairable flaw . most models poor heater . small , better heaters available auto parts store . only problem not enough room for great sound system . very good first car . another consideration . is a ponyac fiero . better gas mileage , better handling . more power . very inexpensive car . also going to become very desirable next few years . good luck . happy hunting .
