once expounged the records will show-N/A where list felonies

misdemeaners,etc...it will read N/A---NON APPLICABLE

In CA, if you have a case or charge expunged (assuming you're an adult), when your rap sheet is run, it will still show the case and/or conviction, but it will show "record cleared pursuant to Section 1203.4 PC."  So any background check will show your conviction regardless of the expungement, but it will show it was cleared.  Nowadays there is no "file" of your arrests or criminal history, it's all done on computer.

Every state has their own rules.  In fact, the rules vary so greatly between states that your question cannot be answered without knowing what state you committed the crime in.  In some states, when a conviction is expunged from your record, it means it can be removed from your criminal record, but that doesn't mean it's not on file.  For example, criminal histories generally cannot be erased.  And say, for example, you go out and commit another crime.  Some courts can find records of the previous conviction, even if it's been expunged, and factor it into the sentencing.

For you and the other poster who is asking what will the records show after expungement.

Expungement means to erase as though it never occurred. This means that any public inquiry will show nothing at all. The arrest and all subsequent actions will be removed from the public file.

Just so you are aware, and as another poster stated here, the file is still kept in another area that is accessible to law enforcement and the courts under strict conditions. This is done solely in case of another infraction being committed during your lifetime.

For all intents and purposes, it will take 4 to 6 months for the paperwork to filter through the various legal channels, erasing the files as it goes. When it is done, all your rights will be restored and any employer check will show no activity.
