I am nervous, I'm 15 and haven't went to a dentish since I was like 7 or 8. Does it hurt? How long will my mouth be numb? How long will it take? (i'm having I think 3 or 4 teeth drilled on 1 side of my mouth) Will I have trouble talking since my mouth will be numb?

  1. The dentist will give you a few shots that pinch a little and that's the most pain you should feel. You should not feel any pain at all when the dentist is drilling (if you feel even slight pain, let the dentist know). to do 3 or 4 teeth it could take about 45 min to an hour or more depending on the type of fillings you're getting (tooth colored fillings take longer!). I think that the numbness lasts for about 3-5 hours. If you get your bottom teeth worked on your tongue may be affected (numbed) so your talking may be a little muddled.

You'll be fine!! just communicate with your dentist!

  2. The worst part is when they lidocaine you. It burns really bad and if its on the bottom they stick the needle really far in. But then everything goes numb. It doesn't hurt after you get lidocained. It takes a little while because they have to drill them out and then put the surfactant in and it has to dry. You won't have trouble talking but part of your lip probably won't move. It goes away after an hour or so.

  3. It depends on the process you have done. I had a numbing with Novacain and that can last about an hour or two. It doesn't hurt if they numb you up well. IF your tongue and the lips feel tingly you are good to go. It's not a long procedure. See if you can get headphones at the dentist to not hear it then. This can help you get that done soon.My daughter had the sedation kind as she hates the needles they use to numb with the novacain so she took some meds they gave prior (you have to get them at a pharmacy)in the morning before . Then she got groggy or doped up a tiny bit, to be in there and calm and not aware of what went on much. She had drool ALOT after though and it was hard for her to say words after with b or d as they had to be pronounced and the speech was looser then. This took about 3 hours or so to stop after. She had to be helped in her place and watched after a while.

She is 20 and that was her first time going to get cavities filled. She takes good care of her teeth but did NOT floss really and the dentist said that is needed to prevent decay. She had 7 or 8 cavities filled then that very day with this help.
